QNAP QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S Thunderbolt-to-10Gbe Adapters Revealed

Brand New QNAP 10GBASE-T and SFP+ to Thunderbolt Adapters Announced – QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S

For those that are keen thunderbolt 3 users, I am pleased to confirm that QNAP is developing their own Thunderbolt-to-10GBe adapters, QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S, that support both 10GBASE-T and SFP+ respectively. For those that have been looking at simplifying their editing workflow in 2018 and 2019 by adding a high-speed NAS into the mix, these two adapters are going to be a really big game changers for you.

Why are the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S QNAP Thunderbolt-to-10Gbe a big deal?

What makes the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S worthy of your interest? QNAP is not the first company out there to produce a functional and easy 10G to Thunderbolt 3 converter and in fact, there are already 2-3 really good adapters out there right now from Sonnet, Akitio and ATTO (see the links at the bottom if you are keen on a ‘right now’ solution). The need for a Thunderbolt 3 equipped Mac/Windows machine to be able to access a 10GBe NAS or network has been growing in popularity over recent years and the advantages of connecting to a 10x usual speed network environment as well as a 10x regular access speed storage solution clear to content creators. Most Thunderbolt users who wish to introduce network attached storage to their editing flow do so in order to allow 2 or more editors to work on projects that live on the NAS, then allow the device to have 10Gbe/1Gbe network access to other users for distribution and finally internet connectivity to distribute the work to a wider audience.

In the past this kind of setup had 1 major drawback – Thunderbolt NAS such as the TVS-1282T3 and TVS-872XT are really, really expensive (typically starting at around £2000+). 10GBe-only NAS is typically much less expensive and therefore adapters that can bridge this connectivity, such as the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S QNAP Thunderbolt-to-10Gbe device allows editing machines such as the Mac Pro 2017 and MacBook Pro 2016 to edit directly on the NAS using their Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port, at a fraction of the usual cost of TB3 NAS.

What makes the QNAP QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S adapters of particular interest in two reasons. First off, as this device is designed and produced by QNAP NAS, there is a very good chance it is going to be much more affordable than other TB3-to-10Gbe adapters. The QNAP range of 10Gbe PCIe upgrade cards arrive at one of the lowest prices in the market right now (around £85+ ex.VAT) and include all accessories. There is every likelihood that this same retail approach will be made with the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S. The 2nd reason is that QNAP have decided to produce two versions this 10G-to-TB3 USB-C device. There is both a copper-based 10GBASE-T version and a fiver based SFP+ version

Despite the fact that both the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S support different versions of 10G Ethernet networks, both devices arrive with dual controller architecture – one controller to handle each of the TB3 and 10Gbe protocol.

Additionally, I am pleased to confirm that the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S do not require additional power and run from system power via the TB3 port on your PC/Mac

Keen followers of NASCompares and SPANTv will know about the Synology DS1817t Thunderbolt 3 NAS spoof earlier this year, but it did open up the floodgates to many users asking about the possibility of a Thunderbolt Synology. Sadly this is still very much a subject that increasingly looks like it will never happen, so those who are looking for a way to edit on a Synology NAS from their Thunderbolt 3 computer will certainly see the advantages of the

Synology DS1817t, QNAP TS-453BT3 Thunderbolt NAS and 10Gbe Explained

When will the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S be released and how much will they be?

Details are still painfully thin on the QNAP QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S price and it’s unlikely that we will see this before the end of the year. However, it is still worth highlighting two important factors. First is that both versions of the QNAP 10Gbe-to-TB3 adapter have featured in official QNAP broadcasts about the HS-453DX and TVS-x72XT series – both due for release this year, so we may still see a Q4 release for the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S. The 2nd factor is that QNAP has a tendency to give you a lot more hardware for your money in most instances and are most likely to give you the best hardware vs price when the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S are released. So those on a tight budget may well do well to wait for the release of the QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S. Otherwise, if you need a Thunderbolt-to-10Gbe adapter now, I recommend the following:

£215+ ex.VAT
