Brand New QNAP Guardian QGD-1600P at CES 2019

QNAP Guardian QGD-1600P – 2Bay NAS with Integrated 10Gbe 16-port Managed PoE Switch

With CES2019 Starting in Las Vega, we are already seeing another of the biggest NAS brands sharing information on their latest releases for 2019. On brand I always keen a keep eye on during this period is QNAP NAS. Over the years we have seen some great hardware announced at this trade show, almost always released later that same year (exceptions such as the TGX-150, of course, will persist). CES 2019 is proving to continue this trend, as QNAP have announced some new hardware AND software featuring on their NAS drive range. In this post, I want to talk about the odd/amazon sounding new QGD-1600P NAS+POE Switch Guardian hybrid device they have announced – it sounds amazon/weird! Take a look.

What makes the QNAP Guardian QGD-1600P so unique?

Although at this time we do not have an image (I will update as and when I do) this new QNAP Guardian QGD-1600P NAS switch-based hardware is designed to combine the features and functionality of a managed PoE switch for optimizing your network, as well as the storage, media, RAID and application support of a mid-range NAS (Plex, containers, Surveillance, Backups, DLNA, etc). QNAP is revealing this device to promote their QVR Pro surveillance platform alongside HDMI out to push its use as a standalone KVM Surveillance station. Below is everything we know so far:

  • Intel J3455 Quad Core 1.5Ghz – 2.5Ghz CPU
  • 4/8GB Memory
  • 2 SSD Bays (SATA 6Gbs 2.5”)
  • 1x HDMI Port for HD Station (Plex, Kodi Unofficially, Surveillance and more)
  • 1x USB 3.0 A
  • 2x USB 3.2 A
  • 2x PCIe Slots for 10Gbe, Cache Upgrades and more
  • Internally managed 16 LAN ports for switch use
  • 12x 10Gbe Ports
  • 4x 1Gbe Ports
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) upto 90W
  • Microchip® VSC7425 Network controller supporting IEEE 802.3bt
  • VLAN, QoS, and port-based PoE Control

What Does QNAP have to say about the Guardian QGD-1600P?

Here is the official QNAP Press Statement from CES 2019:

QNAP boosts networking efforts to roll out a refreshed Guardian QGD-1600P that integrates NAS, managed switch, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities into one device. The QGD-1600P features an Intel® Celeron® J4105 processor, two 2.5-inch SATA drive bays, two PCIe slots, and one HDMI output; runs the QTS operating system with the App Center to realize various applications including virtual machines, containerized apps, and video surveillance; and also acts as a 16-port managed switch, which is based on the Microchip® VSC7425, IEEE 802.3bt ready with power level up to 90W, and supports VLAN, QoS, and port-based PoE control. A live demo with QVR Pro will be presented to demonstrate a budget-friendly option for deploying a video surveillance solution with HDMI monitoring, advanced networking management, and PoE support.

What is my opinion on the Guardian QGD-1600P QNAP NAS Switch Hybrid?

Until I get my hands on the QNAP Guardian QGD-1600P NAS switch, I am going to hold back real judgement. As I have often mentioned, QNAP has a great history of designing hardware that most people thought was either impossible or near enough impossible to stop them (Thunderbolt NAS, A 10G+NVMe SSD PCIe card, an Android Dual OS NAS, etc), but QNAP may well be onto a winner with this one. They are focusing heavily on the surveillance angle, which makes sense given the POE support across those 16 ports being so handy for IP Cameras, but I hope we see more of what else this device can do. Stay tuned and subscribe to the notifications to learn more about what is happening at CES from the big NAS brands.
