Synology RS1221+ & RS1221RP+ Data Sheet Revealed

The Synology RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ Rackstation NAS get closer to Release

Good news for those of you who are STILL waiting for the release of the compact 8-Bay Synology rackmount, the RS1221+ nears release and we now have the official data sheet on the device with a release date scheduled for mid January 2021. Yes, the Synology RS1221+ (and also the RS1221RP+ of course with it’s redundant PSU) have been waiting in the wings for a while now, right the way back to the incidental leak of a RS1220+ last year that came to nothing. The appearance of the RS1221+ was already largely confirmed back in October 2020 (thanks again, to Stashman2000 on reddit) and now this release is becoming a great deal more concrete. Arriving with the internal architecture previously revealed on the DS1621+ and DS1821+, these two new Synology Rackstation devices are the first rackmount devices from the brand to feature the Ryzen V1500B server processor, as well as 4GB ECC DDR4 memory by default. This is combined with the half depth rackmount design (even on the 2x PSU model only increases the depth from 30cm to 40cm), PCIe Gen 3 x8 upgrade slot, 4x LAN and USB 3.1 Gen 1 that has featured on previous units in the RS12xx+ series. A nice middle ground between rackmount and desktop in both price and scale, the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ are still pretty niche (in a genre of IT that is an niche as NAS, that IS pretty small). So, let’s have a good look at the contents of the data sheet and see if there is anything else new to learn.

For those still catching up, the previous post on the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ RackStation NAS can be found herehttps://nascompares.com/2020/10/05/synology-rs1221-rs2421-nas-uncovered

The Synology RS1221+ & RS1221RP+ NAS Data Sheets – What We Know

The full contents of the official data sheets can be found below, covering hardware, software and supported features. Of course it is all presented with that oh-so-slick Synology charm, but it does uncover a number of the highlights of what the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ have to offer.

Safeguarding Critical Business Assets Through Robust Data Protection

Synology RackStation RS1221+/RS1221RP+ is a powerful 2U 8-bay rackmount network attached storage solution, perfect for centralizing data management in short rack depth environments. The RS1221+ series is ideal at handling heavy file workloads and protecting digital assets in small business environments through the comprehensive data protection options included in the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system. Highlights include:

High Performance – Tackle multi-user environments effortlessly with up to 2,315 MB/s read and 1,147 MB/s write performance

Compact Deployment – The RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ feature a short depth of just 298 mm and 399 mm respectively

10GbE Ready – Improve network performance by 5x with a PCIe SFP+ or RJ-45 network card

High Availability – Configure two units together to create a Synology High Availability (SHA) cluster for maximum service uptime and minute-level failover

Versatile by Design

Synology RS1221+/RS1221RP+ is a multi-purpose powerhouse, suited to a wide range of scenarios. The short form-factor enables easy installation on a two-post rack (RS1221+ only) or in space-limited environments. Featuring over 108,173 4K random read IOPS and 2,315 MB/s sequential write for demanding workloads. Additionally, it features 8 bays, supporting both SATA HDD/SSD 2.5″/3.5″ drives, expandable up to 12 bays using a Synology RX418 expansion unit.

Optimized for Data Protection and Integrity

Powered by Synology DSM, our unified data management operating system, and built upon the Btrfs file system, data stored on the RS1221+/RS1221RP+ is safely guarded by modern data protection technologies. Advanced snapshot technology provides schedulable and
near-instantaneous data protection of shared folders and LUNs. File and folder-level data restoration enables restoration of specific files or folders. Flexible storage quota system helps admins effortlessly manage available space by specifying storage limits for shared folders. File self-healing detects and recovers corrupted files using mirrored metadata and RAID configurations. Inline compression compresses data before writing it to the drive, reducing write commands and optimizing storage space.

What are the Internal Specifications of the Synology RS1221RP+ and RS1221+ NAS?

For those who are more of a PC-builder frame of mind, the hardware specifications and internal architecture are going to be the most important part of this business NAS device. Although the majority of the hardware is as we predicted back in Oct 2020, there IS one big area that we were wrong on, and that is thefact the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ do NOT feature m.2 NVMe SSD bays. The data sheet clearly details that “SSD cache can be enabled by using a compatible 2.5” SSD or without occupying drive bays by installing Synology SNV3400/SNV3500 M.2 2280/22110 NVMe SSD drives using M2D20 or E10M20-T1 adapter cards, sold separately.” So that means that although these systems benefit from the Ryzen and Mmeory combo of the recent desktop units, there users are still going to have to source additional PCIe upgrades to take advantage of NVMe SSD caching. Below is a breakdown of what the hardware of these NAS consists of:

      1. For example, when the initial setup only uses a 6TB hard disk with SHR RAID type. Then in the future we will add another 6TB hard drive, do we have to set RAID settings again when adding a hard drive or will it automatically become SHR and be allocated for protection?
        I have DS420+ with DSM 7.1

      2. worst upgrade I have ever done. All DSM 7 has done is regress features and disabled the ability for the user to do anything to upgrade performance. Can’t even use a 2.5 gb ethernet dongle anymore. A pox on Synology! If you want to do anything with the usb ports, stick with 6.2.4 and don’t upgrade – Synology has pulled all copies of DSM 6 from their servers for the 920+ , so remember to keep those upgrade files, don’t delete them after upgrading if you do it.

      3. I don’t know what to say … I am really a Synology fan, but it starts to bother me …

Already they say that they support only the OVERPRICED Synology memory (while there are excellent Kingston modules working very well for a quarter of the price), now if you look at the compatibility list, only the Synology SSDs (normal and M2) are listed (roughly 1.5 – 2 times more expensive than an equivalent Intel or Samsung module).

And it seems that they will announce a new line of HDDs – it is only me seeing a trend here? 🙂

What’s next? They will start making UPSes as well? 🙂

I understand that there are a lot of options out there and probably it is a market strategy (the unit is cheaper, the margin is from – almost – mandatory options), but I think it is a pity … Especially when they specify “Synology will not provide technical support if your device is not on the Synology Products Compatibility List.” …

      4. Hi,
the Synology RS1221+ is listed already on Amazon.de for 1249,50€ and they mention as relase date the 14th of January.
Also other price comparison sites list it already. Looks like the waiting is over. 😉

      5. No m.2 NVMe SSD bays = NO UPGRADE (for me). It’s the one thing that’s missing….
I don’t get Synology; they crippled the original RS1219+ by using the buggy C2538 instead of the available C3538, and now they’re crippling it again by omitting the NVMe SSD bays. It could (again) have been such a great (prosumer) product, but now it just ain’t 🙁

        1. There is a PCI card that adds M.2 NVMe SSD & 10GBe. By adding the option for it, it gives the consumers more options.

          1. Regrettably no SFP+. All 10Gbe networking is standardised on SFP+ & fiber or DAC.
I still think it’s an omission.
