DS418play vs. DS1515+. This is my first NAS i’m gonna buy. I have the option between a completely new DS418play and a DS1515+ from 2017 which was the replacement for a broken DS1515+ someone sent back to Synology after it failed its service. They are roughly about the same in price, so the money is not an issue here and the DS1515+ comes with a warranty until March 2020.
I want to use the NAS mainly as a storage for pictures/videos of my family, documents and media streaming (eg. watch movies on TV from the NAS).
I also want to store the data in an encrypted format using RAID1. I will start with 2 x 8Tb disks.My biggest concern about the DS1515+ are the problems Synology had with it (there are dozens of articles about it not booting any more after roughly 2 years of use). I believe this was also the problem of the seller and why he got a replacement.
So my 2 main questions are:
1. Is it true, that Synology replaced the broken parts from DS1515+ with the parts from DS1517+ in their replacement NAS (the seller told me so) and that those are not prone to fail like the old? So, are the reliability problems with DS1515+ solved?2. Is the DS1515+ still future proof, or are there major features the DS418play is capable of, but the DS1515+ is not?
Synology did have problems with that particular CPU. People made a bigger fuss than there actually was. There were few people losing their data, but very soon after Synology released a new update on their DSM operating system which fixed the hardware bug. To reassure people, Synology even threw in extra few years of warranty. That confident they were that the issue is fixed and not gonna occur again.
DS1515+ is not very future proof NAS. It will cope very well with all the things you have mentioned. But once you decide to move on and get some 4K media, this NAS will not cope with it. The DS418play comes with built-in transcoding engine, capable of transcoding even 4K videos. But if there is no 4K, you are fine.
