DS1618+ vs DS3018xs – SHR vs RAID5

Hello, have confusions with my decision, 1618 have shr which is very attractive, 3018 is more powerful but not sure how it will be futureproof if I will but at the beginning just couple of hdds, and then just would want to extend with bigger in couple of years. What is your opinion, and why do you this think 3018 doesn’t have the shr?

The DS3018xs is indeed on SHR exclusion list (link) as well as other XS NAS models. Synology support standard RAID options and special RAID F1 for SSD solutions. They may have done that to stop people mixing different size drives on professional grade NAS. These series are made for high IOPS expecting 7200RPM or SSD drives inside.

This doesn’t stop you starting with just a few drives. You can have RAID5 with 3 drives if you want to. Later on, you can add more drives to the RAID without moving any data.
