NAS for streaming 4K video directly from a RAR file

I need a new NAS to replace my old WD NAS and was quite sure I was going to get the Synology 918+ when I stumbled across your channel and heard about the 920+. Based on your clarification that it might not be good enough to stream 4k video content and that is my soul purpose of the NAS so now I’m back at square one or even at a loss for how to proceed. I currently stream my content from the WD NAS via a NUC PC to my OLED. I use KODI as the software to play my files that are all packed rar-files. As Plex dont support paccked files that is not an option for me). I have thought it was that my NUC was old (three years) that I couldnt play 4k content and was thinking of replacing it as well but you have now confused me and maybe it is because my NAS is not quick enough? Or have I misunderstood and the recommendation to go for other NAS is if you want to stream directly from the NAS and that that will not be an issue for me as my PC (or future PC) will be strong enough? If I want to continue using a PC to play my media from – what would you recommend for NAS to play 4k rared video files? Thanks! //Erik PS. Thanks for the videos on youtube!

All of the hard work is done on a KODI. NUC PC is quite powerful and probably and much cheaper than a NAS with similar hardware specs.
An easy test you can do is try to unpack your 4K video and see how long it takes. If it takes longer the length of a movie that means you need a faster computer to be able to unpack files as it gets streamed, otherwise similar to transcoding you would get buffering issues.
The best will be to simply stick with a NUC PC solution, but you can add a cheap as 220j to your computer for extra storage and RAID protection. Then you can also use this NAS for things like file sharing and backups. Or otherwise, forget about packed RAR video streaming and store only non-zipped video files.

I hope this helps.
