I recently had the misfortune of losing old music classics, and family photos on a Seagate Central.
I want to start with new system. I’m thinking about a 4 Bay system using only two bays at first , configured in RAID 1. Th W.D. Appears easy to manage for a novice, vs the Synology. I joined the Synology Forum and am getting frequent notices about new upgrades. Are these automatically performed or is this something I will have to manually upgrade?
Also, which might be more reliable?
For a simple photo and non-video file storage WD will be a cheaper option. It will do RAID1 just like any other NAS, but with Synology you can mix different size drives if you want to. It will offer better multimedia apps and other functionality. If you need something to work out of the box it will bee a Synology. The DS418 is the latest multimedia model released by Synology this year. It has built-in transcoding engine letting you watch your videos remotely as well as locally. You can create separate accounts for private content and also share certain folders among all users if needed. If you want to, you can automatically synchronize all videos and photos from your phones to a Synology. Later on, with an incredible filtering function, you can narrow down pictures taken in certain time, place or even featuring specific people and more. It has very similar functions to Dropbox if not better. But you don’t need to pay a monthly subscription.
WD is a good choice if you want to run a Plex multimedia server because WD and Plex have partnered and created free hardware transcoding functionality.
