What’s the best availability equivalent of Hitachi HGST NAS drives.
Hi there. About two years ago I decided to get into NAS and buy my first system. I populated it with 4 x HGST DeskStar NAS 3.5″ 4TB 7200 RPM 128MB HDD at the time the seemed to be the best drives around with low failure rates and fast. I setup my system an left it running. In the last 6 months I’ve started to learn a lot more about NAS and have decided to purchase another more powerful QNAP for Plex (going to get the QNAP TVS-872XT) and also expand the one I have with more drives for offsite backup of the new one.
Basically what is the best equivalent drive to purchase that will be as good as or better than the HGST now that WD has swallowed up Hitachi.
From what I can tell, WD Red Pro is supposed to the current equivalent. Is this correct?
Also wanted to know if the levels of cache have to be matched? Most of the WD Red Pro 4tb drives I have looked at are twice the cache at 256mb. I’m expanding my 4 drive raid 10 configuration with 2 more drives. (adding one to the raid 1 and one to the raid 0)
It would be the best to find exactly the same drives if you want to expand an existing RAID. But if you can’t find them, then new name will be WD HGST. Look for WD HGST Ultrastar DC HC310 7K6 drives.
The cache itself is not used in a RAID. The things to look for is a capacity and RPM. The best alternatives would be :
WD RED PRO and Seagate IronWolf Pro drives.
