I have a Dell Precision 7910 PC which has Thunderbolt 2 output using a mini display port. I would like to connect the Akitio Thunder3 Quad X to it for backup. Will this work and is there a compatible cable/converter to do this, if so should I still be able to get the Thunderbolt 2 speeds?
Thunderbolt data connection and display port physically look exactly the same. 
An Apple computer with a Mini DisplayPort will have this symbol next to the Mini DisplayPort:
On Apple portables, iMac, and Mac mini computers the Mini DisplayPort is located with the other ports and connectors. For the Mac Pro, the Mini DisplayPort is on the graphics card. Refer to the manual for your Mac for specific details about the location of ports and connectors on your computer.
Thunderbolt symbol next to the port will mean you can connect other peripherals through it. 
That usually can be found on Apple computers.
As you have Dell instead, that means you can connect peripherals and docs to it.
Can you connect Akitio Thunder3 Quad X to a Thunderbolt2 port? The answer is yes, you just need to use an adapter

I have connected Akitio and many other devices to Mac mini with Thunderbolt 2 port and using this very same adapter. And it works beautifully. Instead of Thunderbolt 3 speeds, you will be limited to Thunderbolt2, but very often you never really reach speed greater than Thunderbolt 2 anyway. And yes, it is a good solution for futureproofing.
