NAS storage and Virtual machines – Win XP, Win 7, Win 10 & CentOS

Which QNAP NAS for Windows Virtual machines

Hi,

Is the QNAP TVS-673 still the gold standard in this price range (£2k with approx. 16GB RAM, 16-24TB, 6 bay)? I’m looking for both a NAS system and VM. The VM covering Win XP (don’t ask!), Win 7, Win 10 & CentOS). At least 2 VMs running at a time.

p.s. Just come across your YouTube channel and love the format and presentation.

Cheers

Choosing the Right NAS for VMs

Thank you for your message, I hope I can help (spot of British modesty there). I apologise for any typos in my reply, this is being composed whilst on the move. Additionally, forgive the slight delaying my reply, this is a one-man show and as I am sure you can appreciate, everyone loves a bit of free support. Anyway, moving this rather stereotypical English apologetic introduction aside, on to your question.

Yes, the QNAP TVS-x73 Series (with sufficient memory of course) is pretty much the best price vs hardware out there for your requirements. Alternatively, I would recommend a TVS-1282 with an i5 or i7, alternatively, you can go for a TS-877 with Ryzen 7 and installing a GPU card of your choice to be extra future proof. However, these will bump up the price noticeably.

At the budget you stated, I would definitely recommend the TVS-x73 series. Do bear in mind though that the 73 range is now the 73e range, this has reduced the price by removing the remote control and the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Ports for backups.

This may be a little basic for you, but if you want to use the first party QNAP App to host VMs, here is a little more information on them
