Shared NAS over the internet

Shared NAS over the internet

I am digitizing all of my fathers old diapositives and also his collection of home videos (filmed with Mini-DV). At the same time, I am also digitizing my own home video collection plus I have a fair amount of newer material both photos, drone-vids and so on. Since he is not very technical I was thinking that maybe I could “host” a NAS at my place running PLEX containing all the material. Then we could both use it while I would be the admin of the NAS. We both have fiber connections (100 Mbps) so speed should not be an issue. I was thinking maybe the QNAP 453B would be sufficient for the job or should I look at something else for this purpose?

Yes, you will need a NAS with a transcoding engine built in to have a smooth remote streaming. Also fiber broadband might allow you to actually stream HD content without transcoding. The TS-453B is a very popular choice since its release, it can be upgraded as well as expanded.

You can create a second user and allow file uploads, downloads and video streaming. You can also set up few folders to be synchronized to the NAS automatically (like documents folder, video or other). Similarly like Dropbox all data in these folders will be synchronized and automatically accessible for the users you choose. Saves a time find a way to connect and move the files.
