Synology DS220+ NAS Diskstation 2-Bay – Early Information Revealed

Synology DS220+ NAS – Formal Info Leaked

If you are looking at buying a Synology NAS and trying to balance your budget, favouring a decent balance between hardware and cost, the 2-Bay plus series has always been a firm favourite. Each generation of the 2-Bay standard PLUS series they have released over the years (DS212+, DS214+, DS216+II and DS218+) has always been a firm favourite and now, with information received on the DS220+ NAS, it is good to know that this is still very much o the way. Although we featured information on the DS220+ last year, since it popped up briefly on an events page, we have not heard a peep on it. However, this morning we received information relating to import/export documentation that seemingly indicates that the DS220+ NAS is still very much alive on still happening. This, along with information we have been passed on the DS720+, DS420+ and DS920+ seemingly indicate that this range of DSM 6.2 supporting (and DSM 7.0 when released later in the year) NAS drive seemingly serve as a reshuffling of the Synology family lineup, with the DS220+ and DS420+ on one tier, and the DS720+ and DS920+ on the more business-ready tier. Let’s dig a little further.

APRIL UPDATE 2 – Click Below Synology DS920+, DS220+, DS720+ and DS420+ NAS – HUGE INFORMATION DROP

Disclaimer – If you are looking for hardware specifications (CPU, memory, connections, architecture) then you might want to stop reading now. This article is about the information that indicates that the DS220+ NAS is very much in development. If you came for the data sheets and specs, I am afraid I will disappoint you on this one for now.

What do we know about the Synology DS220+ 2-Bay NAS so far?

Synology has always been a brand that is pretty secretive. With much of the marketing flare similar to that of Apple and their own attitude to secrecy being pretty ironclad, it is rare that their product ranges get revealed outside of their own brand events and chosen promotional activities. However, they do still need to follow the day to day drudgery of crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s, and below is a document related to their hardware with regard to the DS220plus (DS220+) and registering it for availability in some locations (Korea in this case):

Now, documents like this are fairly standard practice and often do not strictly relate to a piece of hardware reaching the point of manufacture/release. However, I have only ever followed 2-3 examples in the last 5 years (out of hundreds) that did not end up getting released. In most cases (regardless of brand), if hardware featured on docs like this didn’t get released, it was because it was held back for a more opportune release date or a company decided to go another way on the product development and cut their losses. Now, factors like COVID (sorry to kept bringing it up, but as well as the human disaster that it has evolved into, it has been pretty detrimental to all tech industries too), where it has resulted in a lot of releases being held back till the market could be more receptive. Now, I was as surprised as many of you that we did not see a DS220+ last year, as it seemed prime time for it to arrive, but I genuinely think this doc means the DS220+ is coming and in relatively short order! But When?

When Do We think the Synology DS220+ will be officially Released?

Of course, the release of the highly anticipated Synology DS220+ 2-Bay is the bigger question. I think we can comfortably state a few things, if indeed the DS220plus information above relates to concrete product development. 1, that the naming of the product into the DSx20+/2020 naming convention relates to it being a release in the first 6-8motnhs of the year, as Synology typically will assign the YEAR stamp to a model ID when it arrives in the first half (8 months at a push) of the year, with anything afterwards being designated the year after (eg 2021 / DSx21+). The next consideration is, of course, the impact of COVID-19 on all areas of brand production, distribution and buyer engagement. This means that we can certainly consider that the DS220+NAS (if at all) in late Summer, early autumn. Many would have no doubt speculated this already (as they did last year for 2019/2020), but still never the less this does seem to be a more formal step in the right direction.
