Synology DS918+ or QNAP TS-453B

Synology DS918+ or QNAP TS-453B – Which Should you buy?

NAS as an ms exchange style mail server
Hi Robbie
I have been researching for a small office nas to use as a file server /back up for 5-6 users and after watching a number of your spantv vids on youtube narrowed it down to DS918+ or TS453B favouring the qnap.
Having seen that synology and qnap both have a kind of mail server app wondered if the would give us an exchange type mail server to replace the terrible hotmail with linked accounts we currently use.regards
John

DS918+ or TS-453B for Business?

Thank you for your message, I hope I can help (spot of British modesty there). I apologise for any typos in my reply, this is being composed whilst on the move. Additionally, forgive the slight delaying my reply, this is a one-man show and as I am sure you can appreciate, everyone loves a bit of free support. Anyway, moving this rather stereotypical English apologetic introduction aside, on to your question.

As you have probably noticed, both of these devices are in the top 4 Bay NAS of the year so far:

Best 4-Bay NAS 0f 2018

Additionally, it is worth address that I compared these units late last year (video below) and though I stand by the results, it is worth noting that in recent updates and newly added apps by Synology, but I would definitely recommend an office set up like yours go for the Synology DS918+

Why Buy the Synology DS918+ over the QNAP TS-453B

Both NAS brands provide their own proprietary email server software. In a pinch, I would say the Synology Mail server is best. Additionally, the software on the Synology NAS series will be better suited to an evolving office setting. Applications such as Synology Chat (an internal live chat application for users), Synology Drive (a one-point access software that lets you view open all kinds of files in a single application), Synology Calander (an application that sync your user account/email/data to create a semi-auto and dynamic calendar) and Synology Office (VERY similar to Google Docs and Microsoft Office) will help centralize your NAS and provide a means of communication beyond that of just email (internally) and keep everything internal.

If you are considering the Synology DS918+ (what I would have recommended), here is a little more info on the device (and the rest of the range)
