Synology or QNAP NAS as an NVR

NAS for Surveillance from Synology or QNAP

I currently have a Synology DS211j and have had for many years. Only 1tb drive installed.
I now have several IP cameras and was looking at NVR’s but seems silly to have both. I have found the surveillance station frustrating with the failure of NAPPI, but now have the client version working but only two cameras. I do use the NAS for a lot of DVLA and sometimes struggle with formats and display speeds on smart tv’s. From your article, a QNAP prob seems the thing to go for, 2 bay perhaps? Is that the case and if so what one would provide good processing speed for my needs, and a good interface?
Thanks
D

Choosing the Right NAS for Surveillance – Synology or QNAP

Thank you for your message, I hope I can help (spot of British modesty there). I apologise for any typos in my reply, this is being composed whilst on the move. Anyway, moving this rather apologetic introduction aside, on to your question.

It may well be the case that the NAS you are using is not powerful enough for the task. The DS211J is certainly showing it’s age 6-7 years on and was a cost-effective hardware model at release. I would also STRONGLY recommend you test the software on the QNAP in advance before proceeding with a purchase.

Synology or QNAP – EVERYTHING you need to know

The Surveillance station software on the QNAP platform does not feel as intuitive as the Synology software and feels very complex in setup and output. I compared this software on likewise NAS from Synology and QNAP below:

However, QNAP has recently released their vastly improved QVR Pro and this is a great deal better! The bad news is that you need a NAS with a x86 (so AMD or modern Intel) architecture CPU in order to use this software. The lowest QNAP NAS that supports this is the TS-253Be NAS.

Alternatively, you could consider the Synology DS218+ and the combination of much more modern hardware and more up to date version of DSM/Surveillance station will be a great upgrade. These are the units I would recommend for your needs.

Of course I would prefer you choose nascompares.com to buy your perfect solution, however, if you would rather buy locally, please use the page below to take you to your local Amazon store, click any Amazon advert to take you to your local store and help support this free advice service with Advert Revenue.
