Buffalo Technology Enters the Thunderbolt 3 RAID Market in 2019
Excellent news for those looking for a new and robust RAID storage device for Thunderbolt editing in 2019, as we have just learned of a brand new Thunderbolt 3 RAID device that is being released later in 2019 from the business data storage company Buffalo Technology. This new hardware RAID TB3 USB-C box will feature 6 Bays and arrives pre-populated with media. This is not Buffalo’s first Thunderbolt related solution and already have several Thunderbolt external drives in their Ministation product range. However, compared with their smaller scale data solutions, this is a much, much more advanced solution for 4K Video editors who want maximum storage space, maximum speed, maximum redundancy without lost speeds and most of all, want it in an affordable way.
- Compact & powerful 6bay storage, up to 72TB.
- Suitable for multi-stream 4K video editing
- Well-balanced in high-speed and safety for saving images and video data
- DaVinci Resolve 15 – certified
- With the latest video processing technology to reduce frame-drop
- Hardware Raid 6 Support
- Spot recover function – to extend disk life with proprietary technology
- Available 4-Bay and 6-Bay models next year
What makes the Thunderbolt 3 Buffalo DAS a Big Deal?
Though this is not the first 6-Bay Thunderbolt 3 DAS to enter the market, it is one of the very first to arrive with a hardware RAID backend. Most DAS devices arrive with a RoC, or, RAID on chip, which is a controller chip that creates and handles the RAID when the device is used. This means the connected host PC/Mac does not need to use it’s own hardware resources to keep your data safe from HDD/SSD failure caused data-loss. However, RoC is nowhere near as efficient as RAID controller cards and are often used as a means of keeping costs lower. The Buffalo 6-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Direct Attached Storage enclosure features a hardware RAID controller, so not only is the work of supporting the RAID removed from the CPU, but the superior card will be much, MUCH better at handling complex RAID configurations such as RAID 5 and RAID 6. This means EXCELLENT read and writes speeds, even with HDD (as it will remove the bottleneck of parity building a great deal more) as it maxes the SATA speed possible from bulk drives in a RAID.

When will the Thunderbolt 3 Buffalo RAID Enclosure be released?
We are still awaiting further information on the brand new Thunderbolt RAID solution from Buffalo and will be one of the first to give you both a review of this device, as well as speed tests on just how much benefit you might see from this hardware RAID solution. Buffalo has always been a brand that has pushed innovations in both 10Gbe and RAID hardware for their expanding range of data storage solutions, so I am excited to see what their new Thunderbolt 3 DAS can do. Release has been slated for later into 2019 and we will, of course, update you with more information as we get it.
