Brand Compact 6-Bay DS619slim NAS from Synology
Even more new Synology NAS servers have been announced in the countdown to their Taiwan event. With the cream of the tech industry flocking to Taiwan and Hannover, Gin they in the coming weeks for CeBit 2018 and Computex ’18, Synology are hosting their own private events nearby and we are learning more about all the new diskstation NAS that will be coming later in the year. This time it is the turn of the popular compact NAS, the newly announced DS619slim 2.5″ specialised Diskstation NAS. For those that are not familiar with the slim NAS series from Synology, the DS619slim is a 6 Bay Slim Series Diskstation NAS that traditionally is designed for users who want a low cost, low power consumption NAS that makes as little noise as possible. The DS619slim continues in this tradition but also manages to include some impressive additions that you would usually associate with much bigger 3.5″ diskstation server devices. The new DS619slim is a 6-Bay alternative to smaller 4-Bay DS416slim. It is also a big improvement in other ways. Featuring a brand new chassis, featuring hot-swap bays, as opposed to the DS416slim internal installation, it promises to provide much better RAID and storage options, as well as hopes of the newer series of Annapurna or Realtek 64-bit CPUs. What are the Specifications of the Synology DS619slim Desktop NAS
As this is not the first slim NAS from Synology, the DS619slim and its specs are a little more modest than many that have featured on other Synology NAS announced. Below is all the important we know, along with some pretty clear educated guesses. If something is not concrete, it is TBC till proven otherwise.
- The DS619slim from Synology will most likely be using the Realtek RTD1296 1.4Ghz Quad Core CPU, or perhaps the Annapurna 1.4Ghz ARM chip (TBC, but I hope the former)
- It arrives with an impressive 4-8GB of memory, SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the DS416slim. This further highlights the likelihood of a much better CPU.
- No Details on LAN ports of USB 3.0, but at least two
- Storage cannot be expanded, but with 6 bays of storage, it does open up some great RAID options
- Supporting DSM 6.2, but not Plex or more enterprise applications at this class (should support Synology Drive, Moments and Office however)
- Definitely won’t support BTRFS, but will support SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID), as well as standards like EXT4 and all the traditional RAID levels like RAID 0,1,5,6,10,etc
- 2 Year Warranty, as it is not a plus series model
- Unlike the internal only installation of the DS416slim, the DS619slim arrives with Lockable HDD Trays and hot swapping enabled
- Supporting the latest 2.5″ form factor SSD and Hard Drives
- Low power consumption and noise – kind of it’s biggest selling point. However, I doubt it will be as quiet/low powered as its predecessor given the larger # of bays, trays and better internal hardware
- Dual LAN (TBC) as this is a popular and present feature in the older unit
- No front USB Copy port+button, bit of an odd choice as it would be ideal for a NAS that is almost certainly only going to be used with SSD bays to be able to connect one big external HDD for backups
When will the Synology DS619slim NAS be Released?
Of all the new Synology NAS that we are finding out about in Taiwan and Germany, the DS619slim 6 Bay NAS will likely be the one that is overlooked that most. This is a shame because it genuinely is an interesting NAS and if the hardware is equal (or even better) than that of the DS118, DS218play or DS418, then the DS619slim will be a really competitive NAS server in 2018. Details on the Synology Diskstation DS619slim NAS are very thin and will have more very soon from the Synology events in Taiwan and Hannover, outside Computex and CeBit 2018.
