New Official PlayStation 1 Classic Mini Console Announced
Prepare for the PlayStation Classic. Almost 25 years ago, the original PS1 was introduced to the world and let’s be honest, gaming has never really been the same since. This blog has always been one that has been firmly rooted in the world of network attached storage, but if one subject has dominated above many others in the user-request area, it is to do with emulation. From MAME to EPSXe, so many of you want to be able to play old games on your NAS and though there are options from companies like QNAP and Asustor with their home brew apps and HDMI out, it has never really been full-proof. So, it is for those users that today’s post is aimed.
What is included in the New PlayStation Classic Retail Package?
The new PS1 Mini Classic console is now confirmed and due for release on the 3rd December 2018 this year and it is going to be HUGE. The original console, developed by then known ‘Sony Computer Entertainment’, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics for the first time in their own homes.
With regard to output and power, the PlayStation Classic will feature HDMI connectivity, enabling connection to the vast majority of TVs & displays available today.
Though it is worth highlighting that Sony is not packaging an USB power adapter with the PlayStation Classic. You have to get one extra. The PlayStation Classic requires a USB power adaptor that supports 5V, 1.0 A USB (Type A), however these are fairly common (see HERE) and should not serve as a reason to give the PSone Classic a miss.
Likewise the games that are included with the PlayStation Classic (mentioned below) are all stored inside and the ‘open’ button that the older PlayStation featured to let you exchange discs, is now used to let you change the virtual discs via the menu displayed on-screen, though how games like Resident Evil 2 and Metal Gear Solid if ever featured (that arrived across two discs) are handled still remains a mystery. Finally the ‘reset’ button on the console design from the older PS1 of 1994 is now used to suspend games.
What Games are Included with the PlayStation Classic?
Many have tried to emulate this platform over the last two decades to mixed success and the idea of an official, licenced and legitimate virtual PSone game console to buy is a big, big deal!
Aside from the fact that this device will be a virtual disk based version of the PlayStation consoles, the PlayStation Classic will come preloaded with 20 classic titles. Currently the full list is withheld, but some PS1 classic titles have been revealed:
Final Fantasy VII – a 1997 role-playing video game developed by Square for the PlayStation console

R4 Ridge Racer Type 4 – a racing video game developed and published by Namco for the PlayStation
Tekken 3 – a fighting game, the third installment in the Tekken series
Wild Arms – a Western-themed role-playing video game developed by Japanese company Media.Vision
Jumping Flash – a first-person platform video game co-developed by Exact and Ultra

PlayStation Classic Design and Accessories
The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring the same controllers and similar packaging.
- 14.9cm × 3.3cm × 10.5cm (width × height × depth)
- 170g body without controllers or connected accessories
- Controller 140g each, same size as original non-dual-shock controllers
Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the preloaded games will be playable in their original format.
How Much is the PlayStation Classic going to cost?
Each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to your TV, alongside two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for £89.99 / €99.99 on 3rd December, 2018 – a historic date for all of us who grew up with a PS1 in their homes PlayStation. As with previous mini releases of home consoles over previous years (the Nintendo Mini and the SNES Mini) demand for the PlayStation Classic is expected to be insanely high and Sony PlayStation has a history of underestimating demand at launch! I STRONGLY recommend pre-ordering your device now with Amazon (money be taken till your order is fully processed) and then you can relax and start planning Christmas around your new purchase! The retro emulation console will retail for $99.99 in the U.S, £89.99 in the U.K, €99.99 in Europe and 9,980 yen in Japan.
