An Easy Plug-n-play way to connect to your QNAP NAS at 5Gb/s with the QNA-UC5G1T
Good news for anyone who wants to upgrade their connectivity to the speed on their NAS, but does not have connections like 10Gbe or a PCIe slot at their disposal, with the announcement of a brand new kind of ethernet adapter from the guys at QNAP. As the designated innovators of NAS and with a well-established history of outside-of-the-box thinking, if any brand was going to challenge the way we access and connect with our data, it was always going to be QNAP. The QNA-UC5G1T is a USB 3.0-to-RJ45 bus-powered device that once connected to a host device via USB-C, then allows you to connect an ethernet device to the other end.
However this is more than a simple ethernet adapter, as it will allow you to access the ethernet connection at upto 5Gb per second (USB 3.0 speeds), that’s 5x faster than your traditional 1Gbe RJ45 LAN connectivity. With their popular Thunderbolt3-to-10Gbe devices (QNA-T310G1T and QNA-T310G1S) proving very popular indeed, it makes sense that they would expand on this hardware logic and the new QNAP QNA-UC5G1T USB-to-5Gbe adapter is the product of that.
What is the QNAP QNA-UC5G1T USB to 5/2.5/1Gbe adapter for?
On the face of it, many users might not understand the significance of this hardware development. In order to really understand, you have to appreciate that the speed of data is becoming an increasing hurdle for many users. Not just photo and video editors, or those with massive amounts of data to shift on a continuous basis. The increasing issue of data size vs access speed is becoming a problem for home users too. Whether they have large scale backups that require a fast turn around, dense media that exceeds the 1 gigabit threshold in practical access terms is growing sluggish or simply that the software on their computer requires faster access and synchronization to the files on their NAS drive.
For several years now, I have urged users to upgrade their setup to 10Gbe – upgrading their network switch, upgrading the ports on their host computer with PCIe cards or Thunderbolt adapters, choosing NAS with 10Gbe and/or expansion slots. Many of you listened, but more of you talked about how impractical this might be to your setup, that a whole environment-wide upgrade would prove too costly, or that they didn’t want 10Gbe… just a ‘little bit more speed’. The QNAP QNA-UC5G1T 5Gbe USB Upgrade adapter is the answer to this. Not mucking around with PCIe cards, jsut a nice and simple USB adapter that will give you that access you need.
Bottom line, if you have a USB port, you can use this new device!
What are the Specifications of the QNAP QNAP QNA-UC5G1T 5Gbe Converter
Full specifications and details are still a little thin, but the recent Livestream from QNAP in their Taiwan HQ told us a great deal about the QNAP QNA-UC5G1T and what we can expect from it. Below are the key points from that presentation.
- Aquantia AQC111U network controller inside
- Can be installed in a NAS System with a USB 3.0 port and QTS 4.3.6, to connect your NAS to a 10Gbe network/port and get 5Gb/s (above 400MB/s Read and Write in practice)
- USB Powered USB-C Connectivity with 1x USB A-to-USB C Cable included (USB-C to USB C Cable also supported)
- Metal External Casing for heat dissipation
- No internal fan, so no additional noise
- Multiple QNA-UC5G1T can be connected, but port trunking/LAG is not supported
- Two QNA-UC5G1T can be used (one on NAS and the other on a PC/Mac) to create a 5Gbe workflow
- Compatible with Windows, Mac (official support coming soon) and Linux Systems
- Compatible with QNAP NAS systems
- 5Gbe Maximum Bandwidth speed can be maintained up to 100m in distance
Full details of compatible with Mac and Windows systems, alongside NAS compatibility were touched on, but until the product is fully released and compatibility is fully confirmed, double check this before you place any orders online.
When will the QNAP QNAP QNA-UC5G1T USB 5 Gigabit Adapter be Released?
As this product has been announced in March of 2019, I think we won’t see this device fully arrive until early summer. This is a real shame, as I know a number of keen business buyers with their budgets becoming open in April will be considering a the QNA-UC5G1T as a suitable means to maximize the abilities of older or less advanced hardware in their environment.
A special thank you to QNAP and their LiveStream team for sharing this information on their channel and I recommend that you head over there by clicking HERE to learn more about what is up and coming from QNAP in 2019.
