Quick Summary of the Synology 2020 Taiwan Event
Synology today unveiled a series of new data management products and solutions around increasing their user’s storage control, providing intelligent insights and improving how the three core pillars of their platform behave – NAS Hardware, NAS Software and their ever-evolving C2 Cloud Platform. Additionally, there was a whole lot of new information on DiskStation Manager 7.0 (DSM 7.0) with more detailed management functions, and a new Cloud monitoring and event prevention service – Active Insight. Alongside this, we have been told about more native hybrid cloud storage and file-sharing services with the new Hybrid Share system and other applications have been improved across their whole software platform.
NOTE – In this article, we are taking a BRIEF look at a few of the highlights and I will be continuously updating you all here on NASCompares and on the YouTube channels in the next few days covering each software/hardware highlight in greater individual details. There is an absolute tonne of information to work through so I will be publishing this in individual pieces over the next 2-3 days, rather than have you guys wait around for ages!
The Synology NAS system software DSM has always had simple, convenient and intuitive features, allowing administrators/users to easily conduct and control NAS settings and management. This time DSM will be entering version 7.0 and there have been some big changes from appearance to internal functionality. Once you enter DSM 7.0, the standard browser-based background in a great deal clearer, with the top bar gone menu, application icon changes and even a slightly quicker and more fluid feel, which is the easiest change to notice. When you click the app with your mouse, you can also notice that the execution/response speed is significantly faster than DSM 6.2.2.
In addition, multiple functional designs or menus have been changed and arranged, such as disk management, which is now presented in a much more breadcrumb and more user-friendly system with options a and data being presented in a more hierarchical system of tabs. In response to the fast-growing SSD cache user market, Synology has significantly updated DSM’s support for SSD cache.
The new SSD cache tools will analyze the I/O potential and requirements in a more precise manner and provide users with the most cost-effective SSD based on actual usage. capacity. There are also big improvements with the handling of metadata, with Metadata locking and Pinned Metadata in the cache, but I will cover this in greater detail next week.
Synology Active Insight
When managing a NAS, many people should have encountered a storage array that is downgraded due to a hard disk failure, but it is normal for the user to use it without knowing that the system has a problem, and the administrator may not see the notification message for a while. It cannot be processed immediately, and it is too late to find the failure until the system is unusable. In efforts to address this predicament and help users avoid this situation, Synology has launched Active Insight, which allows users to centrally monitor all managed Synology NAS resources and performance status through the cloud and present information through visual monitoring instruments.
Actively alert the user when the server is in an abnormal state and provide detailed operational recommendations to effectively control the situation before the potential risk causes actual loss. Users can decide whether this feature is enabled or not. After opening, it is mainly identified by Synology Account, and the data transmitted to the cloud is only based on the system operation status, and the content in the system will not be uploaded.
A few years ago, Synology launched its own public cloud service C2. Currently, more than 20,000 users worldwide use it as a cloud backup. Now Synology will further expand it into a production environment and launch a native hybrid cloud storage and file sharing service. Hybrid Share, users can use the local NAS to mount Hybrid Share to quickly expand the storage space, and set the local part of the space as a cache to improve performance.
Moreover, the DSM account profile can also use this function to automatically back up the system configuration to the cloud, which can quickly restore system settings when a disaster occurs, greatly reducing service interruption time. Synology Hybrid Share combines your NAS and C2 cloud space to create a convenient and fast hybrid cloud storage solution. Synology NAS with different locations can also mount Hybrid Share to achieve file synchronization and sharing, and set the cache size according to the needs of each site, which greatly reduces the external bandwidth required for sharing and exchange of data between sites.
Providing the level of access, user control and configuration found in their Synology Drive application, this new Hybrid Share platform focuses on the relationship between your NAS and the C2 Cloud space, adding a multi-layered streaming solution that can lower resource use and free up bandwidth where it is needed when it is needed!
Synology Photos
In the past, Synology provided Photo Station and Moments two photo management and sharing functions. Each of these two applications has its own advantages and disadvantages. Now, Synology has combined them into one. Both professional and general users can have the original ones.

Synology DS420J NAS Drive
Synology has also revealed some of its hardware for 2019/2020 and the first is a modestly powered 4-Bay, in the Synology DS420J NAS. A follow up to the popular DS418J affordable server, this new NAS device uses the same metallic rear-access chassis and is powered with a newer ARM-based CPU than it’s predecessor and 1GB of DDR4 Memory. The Synology SA3200D Active-Passive Rackmount NAS
The SA3200D is the first active and passive storage server that is equipped with a DSM operating system and supports a complete kit. It can be imagined as a high-availability system composed of two NASs. Its active and passive controller architecture can fully protect enterprise key data and service.
The SA3200D uses Intel Xeon D-1521 CPU quad-core processor for each controller, built-in 8GB DDR4 ECC memory, and can be expanded to 64GB. Each node also uses a separate DSM operating system in the SATA DOM to allow the job and data to be completely separate.
The Enormous Synology HD6400 60-Bay 4U Rackmount Server
The HD6400 is the first 4U high-density server that can mount up to 60 hard drives. If all 16TB hard drives are used, a single system can have a capacity of nearly 1PB. The system uses Intel Xeon Silver 4110 eight-core processor, supports 32GB DDR4 ECC memory, and can be expanded to 512GB.
In addition to 60 hard drives for data storage, there are two hard disk spaces behind the unit, and the operating system can be installed with a RAID 1 configuration.
