Subject: more none tech info. I only heard about NAS 5 weeks ago and think its a good idea but don’t even know how to sort out whats best? can you make your own from old PC?
Question:
build my 1st PC 5 months ago. Mainly for 3D CAD work (for a hobby) but getting into video editing.
and need more space also thinking of getting HTPC to watch my videos. BUT can you watch them from a NAS?
Answer:
You can surely build your own NAS (FreeNAS software). People often choose between Synology or Qnap because of their better software. Which is constantly maintained and improved with better functionality and new Apps.
For video editing and 3D CAD, you don’t need very powerful NAS. All you need is fast transfer speed between NAS and a computer which you are doing editing on. I would suggest 10GbE options for that reason. 10GbE means 10 times faster than your existing network speed with regular gigabit cable you plug in your PC.
You will be also able to watch the videos you store on your NAS.
You can consider DS1817 from Synology or TS-453B / TS-653B . These models will be fast and expandable later. You can even start with just 2 or 3 drives at the beginning and put more in as your data grow.
