I have a 213J at home with two WD Red ( 1 TB & 3 TB ). Everything is working fine, I don’t have any issue. I just think it’s time to change for something new.
I use my NAS for Kodi, Download Station, Calibre, Photo Station and that’s all. I’m not doing anything powerful ( I had plex on my 213J, it worked like a charm but I wanted to have the addon from Kodi so I changed )
At first, I wanted to go for a 218J. I’m happy with Syno so why change but after some research, looks like the Qnap TS251 is rated very highly. So what should I do? Go for the TS251? Go for Synology ? I just want to stream my 4K media with NFS on Kodi, and use Download station.
I think it might be a time to change from Synology to Qnap if you are considering between these two models. J series will do some 4K streaming, but nothing heavy. TS-251 will have more power to do heavy video file decompression and streaming. It has more powerful CPU and dual LAN ports for higher transfer speeds. It also has HDMI port which will let you connect it to your TV directly and stream from it without overloading network.
If your current DS213j is capable of streaming your specific 4K type of content with no problem than ds218j will do as well. Synology has little less power consuming setup. You can also save a tiny bit by reducing fan speed to minimum.
Noise between two NAS models will be very similar and quite. For more information about tests performed check standards ISO 17025 for Synology and ISO 7779 for Qnap. They both used a different standard of testing so tests results cannot really be compared.
