I am looking to buy my first NAS. I want the NAS able to do Multimedia server, Plex Server, Chromecast compatible, Data Backup, Files sharing, and Surveillance. The Qnap TS-251A and Synology-218+ are both very similar. It is very hard for me to decide. Therefore I would need some advise.
They are very similar, but DS218+ will be slightly more future proof. It comes with built-in 4K transcoding engine which keeps CPU load low during video streaming. It also comes with free apps for video streaming, surveillance, plex and Dropbox like data backup. If you have smart TV or Sonos – you can cast a media file over WiFi or you can do the same using Chromecast. As a first NAS Synology will feel much easier to understand and use. Qnap is very useful if you like to play with configuration and setup.
