Hi – I would like to set up a home NAS and would be grateful for some advice. I have a number of computers in different physical locations, approx. 3TB of data (photography) and +100 DVDs. I would like to set up a central system that can backup my computers (RAID), be accessed remotely and run Plex with transcoding so i can load all my DVDs. Could you recommend a few options for me? I am willing to spend a little money on getting a robust system that will last several years.
DVD transcoding is not that CPU power demanding. DS918+ will do the job even with several backups happening in the background. It will be also very useful to have two network cables connected to it for activated load balancing. This will speed up simultaneous backup tasks and standard data transfers. Built-in transcoding engine can even cope with some simple 4K media on Plex (or most of the media using DS Video app instead).
If you have some Blu-ray disks to store and access remotely (using transcoding on Plex) then you can consider TVS-682 model from Qnap. It has i3 processor which is a minimum for 4K transcoding on Plex.
