QNAP HS-453DX Silent NAS Specifications Update

Update on the QNAP HS-453DX Silent NAS Specifications

Of all the NAS server devices that we have covered at and around Computex 2018, the one that has easily captured the most attention is the rather eye-catching QNAP HS-453DX Silent NAS. With its rather nice copper lid, white chassis and rather an impressive array of ports, it is certainly a nice looking device with a huge amount of potential. For a better understanding of its ports and external hardware design, watch the video a little further down. For now, though, I would like to share some further information on this device that we have learned since it first popped up at the D&I awards.

HS-453DX Specs

What are the CPU and Memory of the HS-453DX QNAP NAS?

We have since learnt that the new QNAP HS-453DX Silent NAS will feature a brand new CPU (compares with the J3455 CPU found in almost all of the rest of the 2018/19 NAS range). The HS-453DX will feature an Intel J4105 Celeron Processor. This Quad Core CPU arrives with a 1.5Ghz clock speed, that can be burst up to an impressive 2.5Ghz when needed. Additionally, this CPU means that this device will arrive with DDR4 memory up to 8GB (with a theoretical limit of 16GB). This CPU is certainly a big, big surprise and a big jump from the Intel J3455 currently in use. Here is how the two CPU compare on Passmark.

It is also worth highlighting that the Graphics support on both chips differs a lot. The older J3455 CPU currently used in a number of NAS servers in 2017/18 has an Intel HD Graphics 500 Component. Whereas the newer Celeron J4105 has a much better Intel UHD Graphics 600 component. This means that 4K Support will go up to 60Hz – this is how the new HS-453DX can support the HDMI 2.0 4K Specialised connection and playback your media in the best way.

What is the Hard Drive and SSD Media of the HS-453DX QNAP NAS?

One area that our original estimates were wrong about was with regard to the storage media used inside this Silent NAS. It has been confirmed that the QNAP HS-453DX NAS is indeed a 4-Bay NAS, however, it will be the following:

and

So that means that you can use two hard drives inside the HS-453DX (currently available and supporting 12TB and the soon to be released 14TB Seagate Ironwolf and WD Gold Drives) as well as two smaller form factor m.2 SSD Drives for caching or fast acting storage space. That should be an excellent balance of storage space versus fast access, and once you combine that with the 10Gbe 10GBASE-T slot, you will be getting some fantastic results. Though how this will be handled by temperature controls will be interesting to see.

Any other Hardware update on the QNAP HS-453DX SIlent NAS?

The rest of the hardware of the QNAP HS-453DX Silent NAS is pretty well known. The device will feature 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, Rear speaker, 10Gbe Port, 1Gbe PORT, Audio IN/Out and two HDMI Ports. One extra detail we have since learnt though is that at least one of those HDMI ports will be HDMI 2.0. This is a lovely extra touch as currently there are only about 8 HDMI 2.0 enabled NAS devices in the market EVER, and 3 of those don’t have the internal handling power to take advantage of it.
