Brand New Synology RS1221+ & RS2421+ NAS Revealed
Yes, that’s correct, It looks like Synology will be releasing a couple of new 8-Bay and 12-Bay expandable rackmount solutions in their 2021 series, but before going any further, I want to give props to the r/synology community over on Reddit for this. IMPORTANT – Full Credit goes to @Stashman2000 on Reddit for finding this little breadcrumb of information via an official guide page, highlighted via a recent post. This is further corroborated by the image being found on Imgur HERE by user a8y7qrj73r2. The Synology Plus series has always had several options that cover both desktop (Diskstation) and Rackmount (RackStation) and now it looks like the Synology RS1221+ and RS2421+ NAS are very much a real thing. There is precious little more information on this right now other than this image from the Synology Guides pages which indicates several NAS systems in a network environment:
Although this image has since been replaced with a completed blurred one on the guide pages, a closer look clearly indicates that the RS1221+ and RS2421+ RackStation NAS are a thing. See the closer up image below:
Of course, this is a pretty small amount to be going on and with little or no concrete information on specifications, release dates and prices, this should still be treated with caution – especially those on the cusp of installing a new/updated data storage system. That said, there are a large number of educated guesses we can make on these new Synology Rackmount NAS solutions, just based on the previous generation architecture and the recently revealed DS1621+, so let’s speculate.
Synology RS1221+ Rackmount NAS Hardware Specifications – TBC
As mentioned, with so little information to go on, most of the information below is based on estimation and educated guess, and should be treated as so! However, here is what is quite likely to be the hardware specifications of the RS1221+ RackStation NAS, as Synology will likely follow the design and general architecture of the Synology RS1219+, the popular half depth rackmount (12 inches) and Intel Atom powered:

Synology RS2421+ Rackmount NAS Hardware Specifications – TBC
Next is the Synology RS2421+ RackStation, the 12-Bay solution that is a more traditional full-depth rackmount NAS, that is expandable to 24-Bays with the RX1217 or RX1217RP. There will almost certainly be a redundant PSU version (so, an RS2421RP+) and they will follow the architecture of the RS2418+ and RS2418RP+. Here is our estimation of the hardware we are likely to see:

Unfortunately, that is about all we can comfortably assume at this stage. That said, Synology has been VERY HEAVY on NVMe SSD Caching slots on their recent 2020/2021 releases and I would be surprised if they did not appear on the Synology RS2421+ and RS1221+ Rackstation NAS. Likewise, there is the question of the network connections. Synology has still seemingly maintained the 1Gbe RJ45 on there more recent solutions, as well as starting to feature 10Gbe on the XS and SA series as standard. So, with that in mind, these two rackstation NAS solutions will likely be 1Gbe as standard (as well as supporting Link Aggregation/Port Trunking on their 4 LAN ports to bring it up to 4Gbe). Finally, there is the matter of warranty, which in all likelihood will be 3yrs on the hardware (which will be expandable to 5yrs with an additional licence) and the usual lifetime software warranty.
Synology RS1220+ RackStation NAS – Revealed in 2019 at Synology 2020 Taiwan
The reveal of these NAS systems also means that the RS1220+ NAS that was shown at Synology 2020 last year is likely not going to happen. There is any number of reasons for this, ranging from hardware improvements to the effects of COVID on the hardware supply chain from Intel. Nevertheless, if the result is an even better Synology RS1221+ and RS2421+ NAS, then that’s no bad thing!
When will we know more about the Synology RS1221+ & RS2421+ Rackmount NAS?
Synology has become very, very good at keeping their new hardware off the radar of the general public in recent years and even this small amount of information on the RS1221+ and RS2421+ is frankly still remarkably small. I would not hold out much hope to see this physically released especially soon, perhaps in the coming months, but even then, this is largely conjecture at this stage.
