Synology DSM 7.2 NAS Software Now Officially Released
Synology DSM 7.2 brings a range of benefits and features compared to Synology DSM 7.1/7.0. It introduces immutable storage and backup through WriteOnce shared folders, enforcing data retention policies and protecting against modification or deletion. Compliance Mode features like Tamper-proof Clock, Grace Period, Appendable Mode, and Snapshots enhance data protection. Full Volume Encryption encrypts Shared Folders, LUNs, and package data, providing security and convenience with improved performance, but at the VOLUME level! Immutable Snapshots defend against ransomware by securely storing unchangeable copies of data. Turbocharged VM performance is achieved with M.2 NVMe storage volume support on select devices, enabling SSD caching or creating all-flash storage volumes. Block-level full-system backups in Hyper Backup speed up large data backups significantly. Inline zero-block removal improves deduplication efficiency while maintaining performance. Adaptive Login Protection enhances security with multi-factor authentication and confirmation for external DSM admin account access. Auto Block expands protection against brute-force attacks, and QuickConnect servers globally ban IP addresses after failed authentication attempts. Container Manager, renamed and enhanced, allows easy management of multi-container applications through the UI. Combined with improvements in Hybrid Share, coming soon, preventing file conflicts across connected Synology systems and provides detailed logging. These features make DSM 7.2 a comprehensive upgrade with robust security, performance, and management capabilities for Synology NAS users.

Earlier this month, we had Will from Spacerex on the channel and we discussed the things we liked and disliked in DSM 7.2 (based on the Release candidate made available weeks before the full release today). Here is what we thought:
What Are the Key Benefits of Synology DSM 7.2?
Synology DSM 7.2 introduces several benefits and features compared to Synology DSM 7.1/7.0. Here is a summary of the key advantages:
- Immutable Storage and Backup: DSM 7.2 allows you to create WriteOnce shared folders that are locked down against modification or deletion. This ensures data retention compliance and protects folders for a defined period or disables changes permanently. Compliance Mode features Tamper-proof Clock, Grace Period, Appendable Mode, and Snapshots, further enhance data protection. Meanwhile Enterprise Mode has all of the above plus, Admin-only Overwrite when needed to give you the slightest wiggle room! There are also modifiable policies that allow temporary modification windows where appropriate.
- Full Volume Encryption: DSM 7.2 introduces Full Volume Encryption, which encrypts volume scale Shared Folders, LUNs, and package data to protect against physical theft. Previously you had the ability to enable individual encryption to a number of these services, but whole ‘whole volume wide’, but now your can. It improves speed, security, and convenience while achieving 48% sequential write performance compared to Shared Folder Encryption.
- Immutable Snapshots: The new Immutable Snapshots in Snapshot Replication feature safeguards your data against compromised administrator credentials. It securely stores immutable copies of your data, providing protection against ransomware attacks.
- Turbocharged VM Performance: DSM 7.2 expands M.2 NVMe storage volume support, allowing you to accelerate larger volumes with SSD cache or create nimble all-flash storage volumes. This enhances virtual machine (VM) performance. It is worth noting however that it is only available on certain models currently.
- Faster Block-Level Full-System Backups: Hyper Backup now supports block-level full-system backups, significantly speeding up the backup process for large quantities of data. It offers over 2X faster backups compared to individual tasks.
- Inline Zero-Block Removal: DSM 7.2 introduces inline zero-block removal, which speeds up deduplication by reducing post-process dedupe times. This optimization maintains I/O performance while reducing writes to SSDs.
- Adaptive Login Protection: To enhance security, Adaptive Multi-Factor Authentication (AMFA) is introduced in DSM 7.2. It requires confirmation for DSM admin accounts accessed from untrusted external connections. Unrecognized devices, WAN connections, and password-only admin accounts can trigger login confirmation through Secure SignIn, DS finder, or email.
- Enhanced Defenses against Attacks: DSM 7.2 expands Auto Block to cover SMB connections, reducing the likelihood of brute-force attacks succeeding with weaker credentials. Additionally, QuickConnect servers globally ban IP addresses after multiple failed authentication attempts.
- Container Manager (formerly Docker): The Container Manager has been renamed and improved in DSM 7.2. It allows users to add and manage multi-container applications using Docker Compose directly from the user interface. Updating and cleaning up containers is now more convenient. Container Manager is now also available on DS420j and DS223.
- Hybrid Share Improvements: DSM 7.2 introduces improvements to Hybrid Share, which offers global file locking to prevent conflicts across connected Synology systems. It prioritizes files requested at other sites for syncing to C2 Storage, and more detailed logging aids administration.
These are some of the benefits and features introduced in Synology DSM 7.2. It is important to refer to the official Synology documentation and release notes for detailed information on specific functionalities and compatibility with your Synology NAS model.

WriteOnce and Immutable Snapshots availability: https://sy.to/wormmodels.
-
Encrypted Shared Folders and Hybrid Share Folders currently not supported.
-
Volume encryption availability: https://sy.to/encryptedvolkb
-
Requires compatible Synology SNV3400/3500 Series NVMe SSDs.
-
Tested with data from 32 VMs configured as servers, totaling 1.52 TB, and 12 Synology SATA SSDs.
-
Comparing full system backup using Hyper Backup against creating separate file, LUN, and backup package tasks. Tested on DS923+ with 5.3TB of data (95% <4MB), comparing initial backup speeds. Subsequent backup speed improvements may be higher.
Alternatively, you can look at the video below that outlines whether existing DSM 7.1/7.0/6.2 Users that own Value series devices (such as the DS223, DS423, DS220J and even DS120J) should upgrade:
