How reliable is RAID on Synology +desktop vs rack

New small construction company with 8 users, a couple of network printers, hosted VOIP a couple of surveillance cameras. I prefer rack installation but I’m open to professional advice. I have a Synology 411+ the and familiar with DiskStation. I will be using cloud backup and an onsite 10TB external drive.

Wondering if Raid 6 is my best option and I was looking at the RS818+ & 4/6TB OR DS1517+ & 4/6TB & 1/12TB mirror.

With a Cisco SG-300-28PP switch, APC USP 750VA SMT750M2UCT in a StarTeck wall mounted Rack Cabinet 18U x 20″ Deep.

 

The RAID6 will mean, giving up half of your storage in a 4 bay NAS. I know there are many videos out there scaring people about RAID5 risks. But it is not true. Qnap and Synology have sophisticated mechanisms in place to ensure your RAID is safe. If you had a cheap RAID box from an unknown brand or something like FreeNAS then I would be worried. But I would choose RAID5 in any NAS up to 8 bays. If you still think RAID6 is the best, consider getting RS1219+. It is the same spec NAS as rs818+ and ds1517+ but with more bays. You can even half populate it at the start. Regard to use case. Synology Plus series are able to cope with multitasking including surveillance and file server.

Desktop vs Rackmount? It is a personal choice, performance is not different. Rackmount units are often more expensive, because or more metallic structure and opportunity to hide it in the cabinet.
