Alternative to plugging any devices (phone, camera, camcorder) via cable to TV

So far I am storing all the family precious content (photos and videos) on my desktop PC HDDs (setup in Raid 1).
But I am fed up with one thing and that’s the need of plugging any devices (phone, camera, camcorder) via cable to download the content.

When its time to present any of the content to our guests then we use the PC and TV connected via HDMI to present it.
Well we have been living with this setup for quite some time, but we will be moving to a new apartment soon and I decided to upgrade it so it better fits our needs.

My idea is to setup a network storage, where I could safely store all the multimedia content of our family and which could be accessible from all the devices connected to the network so it could be viewed and managed not only from PC but let’s say from a tablet or phone.
I would also like to do an easy backup of the content from various devices – let’s say to download regularly photos from my Android phone and my wife’s iPhone over WiFi when devices get connected back at home.
Also I would like to present photos and videos on our SMART TV (featuring DLNA).

Based on your articles and videos I am now closely looking at QNAP TS-228A NAS, which I would setup with 2 pieces of 2TB HDDs (probably WD Red) and put it in my home 1Gb Ethernet network with WiFi AP.

QNAP TS-228A is a good budget solution to this problem. It gives you mirrored drive protection and reliable backup solution. Alternatively, you can look at DS218j which is simple network drive with amazing photo and video organizing app – called Moments. It has amazing filters like GEO location, and object recognition and more. Using either of these NAS models you can stream content to your TV over DLNA. I would pick Synology for this task but Qnap will do a good job too and will cost less.
