NAS transcoding. I’m considering to buy a NAS for home. I would like to know which one from the Qnap family will be best suited for playback of perhaps 1x 4k and 2x 1080p (this being the worst case scenario).
I will have my Television connected directly to the ethernet cable. This is mainly for 2 tablets simultaneously streaming content at 1080p from my NAS, but I will also like to stream on my smart tv 4k content from it. All this will not be happening at the same time every day, it is just the worst case.
The video files are going to be store as copies of 4k UHD 45 to 60gb.
Also, will it be better if I convert those files to iPad or tablet(android) native resolution, so there is less transcoding?
Thank you. 3,000 8TB
You may also want to connect it directly to your 4K TV via HDMI cable- this will require no transcoding at all. Also if your TV supports particular video format – it will be able to stream an original video file over the network cable. If you have an HDR TV then there are very limited Qnap options supporting it. It would be TVS-1282, TVS-882 or TVS-682 series. If you do think you will need transcoding occasionally – do get one of x882 series NAS (preferably Intel Core i7 version).
If you need something cheaper- have a look at x73 series. It is not as powerful, but you can install graphics card separately to improve transcoding performance.
