I’m was pretty much sold on the QNAP TVS951X for my new NAS investment, but I have since been made aware of the Synology DS918+, which is actually a little cheaper but seems more powerful and feature rich out of the box.
For standard NAS activities (ISCSI/Virtual machines) and more advanced activities such as Plex Transcoding, which do you think would come out best? and which device is best to spend my hard-earned cash on?
It really is now a toss-up between these two, so your advice will probably tip me over the line on whichever one! I will also be looking to buy either one via nascompares.com, including WD Drives and Samsung EVO 970 SSD’s (either standard 2.5” for Qnap or the NVMe for the Synology)
That’s four-bay with dual SSD cache versus 5-bay with 4 SSD (cache or storage). They both are very similar performance wise with Synology being a leader.
As an ISCSI Qnap will be much faster with its 10GbE connection and 4 SSD cache/storage/ tiered storage. Both will allow you to run virtual machines and do Plex transcoding. Plex might feel a lot faster films stored on SSD volume (thanks to tiered storage or caching). I would personally choose DS918+ because it is cheaper. But if I had to say which one is more future proof then probably Qnap with its 10GbE and tiered storage capabilities as well as HDMI.
