Looking to replace an old Buffalo Linkstation 2-bay
The biggest part of files/data are mp3s and photos.
Looking for something that has fast read/write speeds so copying / syncing / backing up doesn’t take forever. Also, my main work horse computer is a laptop running Linux (currently Kubuntu, but probably changing to a different distro soon).
So, I guess there are some NAS to might work better with Linux than others…I’m also considering using the NAS as a document management (like openKM or so…)
On my research, so far I narrowed it down to the following two NAS:
QNAP TS-251+
ASUSTOR AS6102TAs far as HDDs, I found this to be a decent option:
Seagate 4TB IronWolf Pro 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 128MB Cache 3.5-Inch NAS Hard Disk Drive (ST4000NE0025)
When working with mainly small files the weakest link in the chain often is processor and single LAN connection. You need to look at something with Dual LAN and at least quad core Celeron CPU. The TS-251+ is a very good choice. If you would need a little more of future proofing then I would suggest looking at TS-253Be or TS-251B. These NAS models feature PCIe slot for 10GbE network upgrade. You can either get a dual 10G switch or connect it directly to the PC which does most of the data transfers. Dual LAN connectivity will allow you to enable load balancing which can increase transfer speed when multiple devices are connected.
Qnap will be a better choice because of its software. They include free apps to backup/ sync your data and even let you set up your own surveillance station.
