Redefining Speed: The New WD Blue SN580 Switches to PCIe 4.0

The hard drive market constantly evolves, and Western Digital is one of the most active players in the game. Recently, online retailers have begun listing the WD Blue SN580, the sequel to the widely popular SN570 SSD, known for its outstanding performance and affordability.

The previous iteration, the SN570, has often been featured in SSD recommendation lists, maintaining a steady spot in the top 10 due to its excellent performance-to-price ratio. However, as all good things come to an end, the SN570 is now approaching its End of Life (EOL) status, slated for July 31, 2023.

Enter the WD Blue SN580 – Western Digital’s new heavyweight, ready to claim the throne of its predecessor. It features the same M.2-2280 form factor with a length of 80 mm, keeping the compact design users have come to appreciate. However, the crucial upgrade comes in the form of a leap to PCIe 4.0 from PCIe 3.0, possibly indicating a notable increase in performance, though official details are yet to be released.

The WD Blue SN580, specifically the 2 TB model with the identifier WDS200T3B0E, is listed on multiple European online stores, although Western Digital has yet to make an official announcement.

Moreover, the PCI-SIG integrator list, maintained by the body responsible for PCI Express standards, confirms that the WD Blue SN580 will be working with PCIe 4.0 x4. It’s unlikely that the interface will be fully exploited to the extent of the WD Black SN850X, which operates at over 7 GB/s, considering that the Blue series is aimed more towards balance and affordability.

Comparatively, while the WD Blue SN570 employed a WD 4 channel controller and 3D TLC NAND Flash, the SN580’s controller and NAND Flash details remain under wraps. Similarly, the maximum read/write speeds are still unknown, though it’s reasonable to expect significant improvements from the SN570’s 3,500/3,500 MB/s. The SSD will be released in a 2TB model, with the possibility of additional models.

With the transition to PCIe 4.0, Western Digital is setting the stage for faster, more efficient storage solutions.
