hdd raid vs ssd raid
I’ve watched a few of your videos and they have been really helpful. Currently I’m encountering some issues and had a question for you regarding a RAID 0 volume from 6xHDDs vs 6XSSDs. My current volume of 6xHDDs has slowed down considerably as I filled it (about %65). I shot a very rough 3 min. video for you articulating the problem a little better but thought to ask your advice on this before I buy 6 WD red NAS SSD drives. Happy to buy them from an affiliate link if you have one I can navigate to with.
You are right about bottlenecks. I this case you are probably limited to SATA speed or PCIe lane which SATA is using to talk to CPU. Also, you are using software RAID which means your CPU need to work harder as you are getting more data stored.
SSD would improve things since data can be read/written instantly where HDD takes time to find the right sector. Also, it depends on the RAID itself. RAID5 and even more RAID6 is requiring more CPU power and slow things down. The best is RAID10. RAID0 (will die one day, never know when).
Having a RAID card installed in the computer would also improve speeds massively since CPU is not needed anymore. All parity checks are done on a card.
The last option is editing directly from the Thunderbolt DAS box (preferably with hardware RAID on it again) or NAS (which might be expensive eg TVS-872XT).
I hope this helps.
