Where I am; Photographer, PC is Xeon Quad 3.7GHz, USB 3.1 ports, 2 x 1Gb LAN RJ-45, 64GB RAM, Intel 1.2GBPCIe SSD, Win 7 Pro
Drobo 5c (to USB3.1 tyee A connection). Image library 7TB. Coying a folder of images say 50GB TRANSFERS AT 50-80MB/s. Sounds very slow.Where I want to be: Want rack mount (reclaiming desk top real estate.) Can’t find DAS of suitable size and Non-Thunder bolt connectivity in 1RU config.
Would put a 10GBe dual port card in the PC, similar ports in NAS. 4x4TB or 4X6TB should work.
DAS is hardware. Percieve NAS has a whole lot of software to deal with. NOTE WELL–I ONLY WANT FAST SIMPLE STORAGE. (At least faster than current situation). Have no interest in sharing with another PC, connecting to various internet.network applications. (Should possibly investigate more sophisticated backup options from the NAS?)
Where’s the bottle neck? Max CPU speed? Max internal memory? Connectivity (10Gbe and 2 cables seems max for me) 8 bays with small capacity drives?
Synology 1619xs? Other???
Qnap tr-004u is a 5Gbit USB hardware RAID solution. NAS needs CPU power to convert network protocols and eventually send data over and meantime maintain the disk parity. Hardware RAID has a dedicated chip will take care of parity data and give you maximum bandwidth for the connection. The only limiting factor in this scenario would be the hard drive choice inside this DAS and file types you are copying.
I hope this helps.
