Encrypted Backup Speed. I am currently using a DS416j as my master NAS device and a DS115j as my offsite NAS backup. The 416 shares are unencrypted while the 115 shares are encrypted, as they are offsite. While syncing the 115 on my local network before I deployed it, I noticed that I was getting only about 3-4 MB/s transfer rate. I tested that same transfer to a non-encrypted share on the 115 and saw much better performance, 40-50 MB/s. If I wanted to increase the transfer speed to an encrypted share, which unit would need to be more powerful, the main storage or the backup storage, or both. I’m assuming the backup does the final encryption before writing the data, but I wanted to know if you have done any of this testing before?
Yes, the receiving NAS will need to ensure that data is encrypted and saved on a shared folder. The J series are the weakest NAS models out there. If you want to increase the speed of encrypting data transfers, get a NAS with an encryption engine built in. This will take the strain off the CPU. And effectively will increase your data transfer speeds.
