NAS for Folks. My folks have been relying on Google Drive and Mega for backing up their files, photos and music. They rely on my media server for access to their backed up movies and shows. My server has been acting up lately.
I want to untangle them from relying so much on these external sources. As such, I want to get them setup with a local NAS that can sync with any NAS or server I setup here. I want them to be able to have a good, easy to use backup service and it would be nice if they could also have some nifty web-based, NAS-hosted apps. I would like them to be able to have a locally hosted Emby or Plex or other DLNA server that can sync with mine so they get up to date data. They are retired and living off life savings and Social Security so they can not afford much and as such I would like to help them out. I myself am aiming for picking up a QNAP TVS-682-i3-8G-US to replace my server so it would need to be able to work with that. I live about 50 miles away and they have symmetrical, gigabit fiber.
I can see you know quite a bit about NAS. The QNAP TVS-682 will indeed be a very good option for backing all these pictures, music and videos in one place. The CPU will allow anyone to stream the videos remotely with no problems. You can set up user accounts to keep things private and also you can have public folders for sharing. It will also come with plenty of free apps. This will allow you to turn this NAS into many different things all at once.
