I’m in the market of buying a 2-4 bays NAS with the possibility of running a couple of (linux) VM/Containers.
To be honest much of my reason for buying a Synology is the design, Qnap doesn’t make a “pretty” black NAS, it seems that they are unable to settle on a design and keep it, too messy for me.
I’m almost settled on a Synology DS218+, but I’m also overcurious about the Qnap TS-431X2 especilly the 10GbE SFP+.
So for my questions:
1. Why is TS-431X2 not more popular? It seems like a bargin, whats the catch?2. Where is the 2.5/5/10GbE NASes and NICs, our WAN speed is increasing, but LAN is at a standstil?
3. 10GbE seems to be much more available on non Intel cpu’s, why is that? and when will Intel step up the game.
The TS-431X2 is a Very weak NAS- it is made for backups and network data storage only. Thanks to its 10GbE port you can potentially achieve 400MB/s transfer speed if you have a 10GbE switch and 10GbE network card on a destination device.
All new NAS models should already come with a 10GbE port. Synology is very resistant and ignoring market trend- adding only PCIe slot for xs models. Qnap is also not adding 10G, but at least they offer PCIe slot on a wide range of units. The TS-253B / TS-453B (be) can be upgraded to a 10GbE and will do a great job with small virtual machines.
The 10GbE might seem to appear more often among non-Intel CPU NAS, but it is just a coincidence- it actually appears mostly on cheap NAS models made for fast backups. NAS manufacturers still think that fast backups is the Only use case for the fast 10GbE connection. But reality will soon bite them…
So your options are DS218+, DS718+ (for a faster virtualization) and TS-253B(be) (very similar as 718+).
