New NAS 8-bay for 4K, Kodi Media and more
I want to buy a new NAS for my movie collection. To be prepared for the next year I want to buy a 8-bay and put 8x10TB HDDs in and set up a RAID5. (HDDs will be WD Red 10TB or Seagate Ironwolf 10TB)
But I’m still looking for the right NAS (with no HDD installed for ~ 1000€)I want to play 1080p Blu-Ray Remux (25MB/s+) and maybe 4k in the future on my TV, so it should be capable of doing that without struggeling.
I want to buy a VERO 4k to run Kodi on it, to manage my library. If I understand it correctly, I can install Kodi directly on the QNAP? So This could save me more money?I’ve three in mind and don’t know which one is the best for my purposes.
Synology DS1817+ (8GB)
Synology DS1819+ (8GB)
QNAP TS-873-8GOr is there any better advice?
Choosing the Right Kind of NAS for 4K and Kodi in 2019
Thank you for your question. First off, it is worth remembering that as competitively priced as those two Synology you mention are, both the DS1817+ and DS1819+ do not support 4K in the way that you will need and also can only be used by KODI as a file repository, not to actually host/support/output Kodi. The QNAP TS-873 you mention DOES support 4K very well but does not have an HDMI output, so you will definitely need to watch KODI on another device (such as the VERO device you have mentioned). If what you are looking for is an 8-Bay NAS that supports 4K, at this price level, then you have pretty much selected the perfect NAS (if you do not need an HDMI). There are certainly better 8-Bay NAS than this (the TVS-1282, TS-1277 and TVS-872XT to name just three), but these all cost 30-60% more in hardware price.
Unless you want to order less Hard drives (so, 5-6 drives for example) and then add more drives later when your budget allows (then expand the RAID as needed on the software), then one of the three other QNAP examples would be a much better choice is the best choice for you.
