I need it mainly for backing up and serving my home videos and pictures.
I would like fast speeds (major issue with my last NAS – Drobo FS).
I believe the 1019+ has a better CPU, which is what I want. But the 1618+ has 4 LAN ports, which means faster speeds, right?
If you want to know which NAS will be faster file server then definitely DS1618+. It comes with 4 LAN ports and potential 10GbE card upgrade option. You can choose to enable load balancing or do link aggregation with those 4 ports. DS1019+ is very pointless NAS. It has a very innovative feature – NVMe cache and five bays. But all this potential speed is trapped behind those two 1GbE ports. It is a very disappointing release. But there are good things about it as well. The Celeron processor will allow you to do better video transcoding if you want to stream videos outside the home (on a mobile or remote computer). But if you plan to watch videos only inside your home network- transcoding functionality is useless for you. You can easily stream HD or 4K content within your local ethernet network.
