The X-Sense SC07-WX is packed with features designed to keep your home safe and connected. Here’s a breakdown of what this device offers:

  • Easy Installation and Setup: The alarm system is straightforward to install and set up. It comes with all necessary components, including screws and a base.

  • High Sensitivity: It quickly detects smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) levels, alerting you promptly.

Using the App

The next step involves downloading the X-Sense mobile app, which is essential for managing and monitoring the alarm. The process is straightforward, thanks to a QR code included with the device that directs you to the appropriate app store. Once the app is installed, enabling notifications is crucial, especially critical notifications, so you receive immediate alerts if the alarm is triggered.

Setting up the app is user-friendly. You can create locations and assign names to each alarm for easy identification. Pairing the alarm with your phone is simple: press the test button for five seconds to initiate the discovery mode, enable Bluetooth, and enter your Wi-Fi password. The app completes the setup process, and your alarm is ready to use.

The app’s functionality is impressive. You can add multiple alarms and manage them all seamlessly. It logs all events, allowing you to review what has happened, and you can customize which notifications you receive. Additionally, you can disable alerts for certain events, like tests, if you prefer. The app also supports adding accessories, enhancing the overall utility and effectiveness of your home safety system.

Alarm Self-Testing

The X-Sense SC07-WX features a convenient self-testing mode to ensure the alarm is functioning correctly. By simply pressing the test button once, the device initiates a comprehensive testing cycle. If all systems are operational, the alarm will indicate a “pass,” confirming that it is ready to protect your home effectively. This straightforward self-test process is crucial for maintaining the device’s reliability over time.

Smoke and Flame Test

To evaluate the X-Sense SC07-WX’s responsiveness, we conducted several practical tests using different sources of smoke. While a steak wasn’t available for testing, we used basic methods including a flame, vape, and heated tobacco.

First, we attempted the flame test, which did not trigger the alarm. Moving on, we tried using vape smoke. This time, the alarm responded immediately, sending a notification to the mobile app, which confirmed its effectiveness. Finally, we tested with heated tobacco, which also successfully triggered the alarm. These tests demonstrate the alarm’s sensitivity to various types of smoke, ensuring timely alerts in real emergency situations.

Smart Home Integration

We attempted to integrate the X-Sense SC07-WX with various smart home systems to enhance its functionality. Unfortunately, the alarm is not compatible with Apple HomeKit, and similar issues were encountered with Google Home. Despite multiple attempts, we were unable to add the device to these smart home ecosystems. Users looking for seamless integration with their existing smart home setups might need to consider different models that offer broader compatibility.

Gas and CO Tests

To test the X-Sense SC07-WX’s ability to detect gas and carbon monoxide (CO), we simulated various scenarios. For gas detection, we used a plastic bag and lighters to create a controlled environment. However, the alarm did not detect gas, which is consistent with the fact that it is not designed for gas detection.

Next, we focused on generating CO. Burning candles did not produce sufficient CO levels to trigger the alarm. Struggling to generate adequate CO levels, we decided to create a safe environment using a pan and paper. Despite these efforts, the results were inconclusive, indicating that the device might require more robust testing environments to effectively detect CO. This highlights the need for users to have dedicated CO detectors in environments where CO presence is a significant risk.

Privacy Test

To assess the security and privacy of the X-Sense SC07-WX, we monitored its data transmission using a Snowy router, which logs all network activity. Over a 24-hour period, the two smoke alarms uploaded a mere 47 kilobytes of data, indicating minimal data usage. The device primarily pings its proxy server to confirm that everything is functioning correctly. If an issue were detected, the proxy server would send a notification to your phone alerting you to smoke or CO detection.

We further examined where the data was being sent. The only server that the data communicated with was the X-Sense server, ensuring that the device talks to a single, secure server. This focused communication reduces the risk of data breaches and contrasts with other devices that often share data with multiple servers, potentially compromising privacy. Our tests confirmed that the X-Sense SC07-WX maintains a high standard of data security and privacy, making it a trustworthy choice for home safety.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Very easy to set up. It comes with a base, screws, and everything needed. You literally just screw it to the wall or the ceiling and slot it into place. The alarm is ready to connect to your app. Scan the little code in the manual, open up an app, press for 4 seconds to activate discovery mode, and you can link to your phone.
  • Quick response to smoke or CO. It took a couple of seconds, maybe 20 seconds, for it to ring the phone saying that there is smoke detected. Very sensitive, very fast.
  • No need for a base station. It’s a standalone unit. Once installed, it has its own IP address, its own little brain inside, and can communicate and do the job. No need to spend time setting up a base station, linking to a base station. It’s a very simple, standalone solution and it just works.
  • Sensitive to modern world technology like vaping. If you want a smoke-free home, this alarm will detect that and will alert you if someone is trying to break the rules.

Cons:

  • Standalone smoke alarms cannot be linked together, at least not this particular model. There is a model which comes with a base station that allows linking together every single unit of these smoke alarms. If smoke is detected on one alarm, the other alarm will stay silent but you will get a notification on your phone.
  • No option to link to smart home systems like Google Alexa or Apple HomeKit. This particular model cannot be linked to a smart home.
  • Cannot do a test from the app. Other models that come with a base station have the ability on your phone to click a test button and all alarms will be tested from a click of a button. With these ones, you need to press a test button and it will individually test each alarm.

Available Accessories

The X-Sense smoke alarms are very sensitive to modern world technology like vaping. If you want to have a smoke-free home, this alarm will detect that and it will alert you if someone is trying to break the rules. On the slightly negative side, these standalone smoke alarms cannot be linked together, at least not this particular model. There is a model which comes with a base station since this is a standalone unit it cannot be linked together with another one like this which means if there is smoke detected on one alarm the other alarm will stay silent but you will get a notification on your phone so it might not be as important as you might think but you can get a different model from the same brand which comes with a base station which actually going to allow you to link together every single unit of these smoke alarms and then if smoke is detected on one alarm all alarms will go off the other thing which I wanted to see especially for IP-based smoke alarms was the ability to link it to smart home for example Google Alexa or Apple HomeKit there was no option to link this to my smart home and the other thing which is unique to this model is that you cannot do a test from your app they have other models that come with a base station and you have the ability on your phone to click a test button and all alarms will be tested from a click of a button with these ones you need to press a test button and it will individually test each alarm but overall it’s a really good product I really like it if you want to make your home a little bit smarter you can get a model with a base station which will allow you to link certain sensors like humidity or water leaks temperature sensors smoke alarms on its own temperature sensors or combination alarms so I would certainly recommend this brand.

Conclusion

The X-Sense Wi-Fi Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm SC07-WX is a reliable and robust home safety device. Its ease of setup, quick response time, and comprehensive app integration make it an excellent choice for enhancing home safety. Despite its limitations in smart home integration and inter-linking, the SC07-WX’s strengths make it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a standalone solution.

For users seeking a reliable, easy-to-install home safety device that offers modern features like Wi-Fi connectivity and mobile app integration, the X-Sense SC07-WX is highly recommended. While it may not suit those looking for extensive smart home integration, its standalone capabilities, sensitivity to smoke and CO, and user-friendly app make it a standout choice for home safety.
