DS1019+ NAS at the Synology Solution Exhibition Germany – Your Questions Answered

Synology DS1019+ NAS – Let’s get Physical!

Our CeBit 2018 Coverage continues and today I got to get a great deal more hands-on with the Synology 5-Bay that all indicators from last week’s coverage of Computex 2018, was your favourite unit that was unveiled. At the Synology Solution Exhibition event in Hannover I was able to learn more about this lovely little device, what it can do, what it cannot and Synology’s plans for it later this year. As with all of the event’s hosted by the big ‘S’ NAS brand, it was a rather informative affair and it gave me a chance to ask the questions you guys have from YouTube and privately here on NC. There is no denying, there are certainly similarities in external and internal hardware to the DS918+, but after the rather lukewarm DS1517+, I think many of you have been waiting for a solid Synology 5-Bay NAS like this to come along.

The Specifications of the DS1019+ from Synology – Quick Reminder

Before I tell you all the new stuff about this NAS, if you did not catch our coverage of the DS1019+ previously, below is a quick reminder of the hardware/software specs. Unsurprisingly (and like most of the NAS devices we have seen at CeBit) it’s a pretty impressive setup:

Your Questions about the DS1019+ Answered

This is not the first time we have heard about the DS1019+ NAS. Between unofficial Synology leaks and our coverage of Computex 2018 here on NASCompares, SPANTv and NCTv, we have let you guys know plenty about the DS1019+. However, now we are face to face with it and the team at Synology we got a chance to put your questions directly to them. I will keep these questions updated as much as possible and add more if they get popular. Here is what you wanted to know:

When will the Synology DS1019+ NAS be Released and how much will it be?

Though they would not commit much, they did slate it as a Q3 release – not a massive surprise. That said, we are going to see a TONNE of new Synology NAS at this time. Also, I think it is worth mentioning that I will be in the queue right alongside you when this is released, as this could potentially be the best home NAS of the year.

What is the Difference Between the DS1019+ and the DS918+?

One look at the specifications of both the DS918+ and this DS1019+ show that there is practically nothing between these two devices than a single extra HDD/SSD Bay (see article below), however, it is worth highlighting that this is going to be a shakeup about the food chain of Synology NAS towards the end of this year to better define the NAS available and to cover different user tasks (coming up later), but to answer the question as it was given to me – “it’s more storage and gives a better coverage for having multiple RAID within a single device”.

Synology DS1019+ vs DS918+ NAS Comparison

Will the Synology DS918+ continue to be available after the DS1019+ is released?

Returning to the point of the Synology food chain – there are no plans to replace/retire the DS918+. The DS1019+ is planned to slide into the food chain where the DS1517+ lives. This will provide the all-important 5 Bay storage that many users require, as well as NVMe caching that is often requested at this storage level. However, with this shift and movement of the existing DS1517+ 5-Bay, it means that rather than replace the DS1517+, it will serve as separating them by their end user – one for home media and editing, the other for business and VM setups. Both will have the backup and all the DSM 6.2 application support you need, but it will be a tweaked Synology family line up. How this will pan out, I cannot tell you (I left the crystal ball back in London), but with the right allocation of memory across the lineup, I think it might actually be a good thing!
