Brand New Synology DS1520+ and DS1621xs+ NAS Revealed
Good news for anyone waiting for a new NAS from Synology and want to ensure they get the ‘latest generation’ with the reveal (thanks to Luka @ BlackVoid) of a new Synology Diskstation device, the Synology DS1520+ NAS. Although reveal might be a tad strong, given that the model ID is largely all we know at this stage. Though, thanks to the architecture of Synology model IDs, we can make some educated guesses about the hardware. However, we are currently unable to identify whether it serves as the predicted update to the DS1019+ (eg Intel Celeron, NVMe, 2x LAN, plastic chassis) or an update to the older DS1517+ (Intel Atom, 4x LAN, metal Chasis). If it is the latter, it may well kick off the new generation of NAS in the Atom server family for 2021 onwards. Luckily, we have much more information on the newer DS1621xs+.
The Synology DS1621xs+ nears Release and Has an Upgrade
The Synology DS1621xs+ NAS drive (first revealed way back in late 2019) is a NAS that many have been waiting for – a spiritual hybrid of what makes the DS3617xs and DS3018xs very popular, this takes the best of both and adds even more to the mix. Huge thanks and credit to Luka, over at BlackVoid for finding out this information and sharing with the community. I am pleased to confirm that this 6-Bay NAS is still very much on the release schedule AND has received a hardware change since it was first revealed, namely that the DS1621xs+ (originally revealed as the DS1620xs) is going to be 10Gbe enabled. This is a big, BIG deal. Especially given the tiered storage nature of the device and its upgradability and expandability. So, let’s talk about this new NAS and why you should be excited about it.
Synology DS1621xs+ NAS – Hardware Specifications
Although the majority of the information regarding the hardware specifications of the DS1621xs+ 6 Bay NAS has not changed since we first revealed it last summer at the based Synology Solutions Exhibition, there HAS been two distinct changes. Firstly the addition of a 10Gbe connection, which means that this device with it’s Xeon processor and 6 bays is going to give you a more than enough horsepower (with the right drives) to provide 1,000MB/s to a supported switch or directly to a 10Gbe equipped PC/Mac system. The second big change is that the device has now dropped the originally proposed 4x 2.5Gbe ports that were present when the device was first revealed. Whether this is Synology deciding to give the 2.5/5Gbe market a miss for this generation is still up for debate, but these 4x 2.5Gbe have been replaced by 2x 1Gbe. However, I think the switch to 10Gbe on this device makes a great deal more sense and is likely one that the buying public are going to agree with. Below are the specifications we know:
- Xeon D-1527 Quad-Core CPU – 2.2Ghz (can be burst to 2.7Ghz)
- 8GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM Memory (Max 32GB)
- 6 SATA 3.5” Media Bays
- 2x PCIe Gen 3×4 NVMe
- 1x 10Gbe 10GBASE-T (RJ45)

- 2x 1Gbe RJ45
- PCIe Gen 3 x8 Slot
- 2x eSATA ports to connect 2x DX517
- 3x USB 3.0 Ports
- 16.6cm x 28.2cm x 24.3cm
When will the Synology DS1621xs+ NAS Drive Be Released
The updated information we have learnt about the new Synology NAS (thanks to BlackVoid) arrives from leaked data sheet information, which is a very good indication that this device is closing in on official release. This along with customs/license documents relating to the new DS1520+ are also a good indication that these devices will see release in the new few months. However, it has to be stated that this is conjecture and hardly concrete! However, given the length of time since this device was first revealed, this solution along with a few others that are seemingly on the fence (RS1220+/RS1221+, HD600 and more) I think we can assume that release will not much too far aware.
If I Cannot Wait Till the Synology DS1621xs NAS, What Should I Buy?
If you are looking to buy a NAS drive from Synology right now, then (despite the DS1620xs NAS‘ early appeal) I would recommend ordering sooner rather than later. A number of the key hardware specifications of the Synology DS1620xs NAS are available now in older devices and if the safety and integrity of your data are at stake, the DS1620xs is just not worth waiting for. I recommend the DS3018XS NAS drive as a viable alternative which is available now.
