I’m a 3D modeler and recently I lost all my data in my 4TO WD green HDD. So I was looking for safety for my professional files and also some fun. (I like to play video games on the weekend and it could be great to access it through my future NAS).
In your “top 5 -2 bay nas of 2017” you are saying that the DS718+ is really great for working professionals. So I was wondering if it was suited for me.
So my questions:
1- no Plex for the ds218 and ds218play… so it means I can’t access my videos on my phone ? For example, if I shoot some videos with my Galaxy s8 phone in 4K and want to free my phone from those files and put it in my NAS. I won’t be able to read it with my 4G data ? If YES, I don’t really understand what plex is for ?2- I’m afraid that the way I want to use my NAS is not really the proper way to use it.
– I want to externalize my internal Hard Drive from my PC (storage, I’ve got an SSD for windows).
So it would mean :
– multimedia
– backup
but also
– video games on NAS (like final fantasy 15 (100go space))
– 3D work files
First of all, you need to understand at what speed your new NAS will need to work. A regular network is made using 1Gbit cables and switches. So if everything connected over wires you can get around 130MB/s (MAX) speed. But with a bit more advanced setup and DS718+ using 2 LAN ports and aggregation you can reach the speed of more than 200MB/s. Your current PC has an SSD which works at the speed of around 500MB/s. So if you want to put your games on the NAS – they will not work very fast if at all. If you really would want to play games from your NAS, you will need minimum 4 SSD drives and 10GbE network setup to get speed around 500-1000MB/s.
Plex is just a video organizing app, which will group and display your videos based on location or category for easier browsing or searching. To watch videos outside your home network you need to pay plex monthly fee of 5$ or 5EUR. But you can do remote streaming with better results using Synology own App DS Video. It will work much better than plex in will be for free.
So none of these NAS will do games, but you can certainly do 3D work files over the network. SSD drives would make things quicker but are not mandatory (quite expensive). DS218play will let you do all of this with no problem. DS218+ will let you have more video streams (around 2 for 4K) and DS718+ will have even more video streams possible and quicker loading times. It also is expandable up to 7 drives later and 2 LAN ports.

What can I connect to a NAS?
Wireless Speaker Sonos
The great thing about Sonos is that you don't need to pay for music subscription service. With the cheapest NAS at home like DS115j or any other, you can have your backups done for all of your devices and still use your network drive as a Sonos music library. Sonos will connect to your NAS via your network and let access your provided music library. If you have little more of IT knowledge, you can even set up your Alexa or Sonos with Alexa built in to play music on your voice commands ("Alexa! Ask DS Audio to Play Music!").Casting devices
Nowadays it is so cheap to upgrade your old TV and make it smart. All you need is Google Chrome or EZcast alternative plugged into your HDMI port at the back of your TV. Now you have great functionality added to your TV to send a video file directly from your NAS to a TV. No need for wires and chargers and other mess. You can use your phone as a remote to go to your movies or family videos and cast that content on your TV during family or friend gatherings.Apple TV
Amazon Fire TV
You may not have a smartphone, or you just simply prefer to control your content with a remote in that case Amazon Fire TV will be a great addon to get to your TV. It also plugs into your HDMI port and will play content from your NAS to a TV. No wires no mess.nVidia Shield TV
It gets even better! If you want some more entertainment and all previously mentioned functions - nVidia TV is a great thing to get. You can use it for playing games and watching movies from your NAS. The greatest thing is - shield TV does video transcoding. So even if you have a cheap NAS with a weak CPU, in a combination of shield TV you can now automatically on the fly change video file size and format for a destination device. It is a great way to reduce network load and let older devices to play video content which normally was not supported on the device.Where to Buy a Product | |||
