QNAP DDR4 NAS with 64-bit for streaming on Android TV with Plex

I currently have a QNAP TS-659Pro which is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. I have 6x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf drives inside.

I use it as a Plex server mainly, fortunately, we rarely need to transcode as we send the data to an Android TV with Plex (which appears to have most codecs available). I also run Sonarr and Radarr.

Unfortunately, due to QNAP dropping the 659Pro with regards to firmware updates, I’m stuck at 32-bit and there are fewer packages available these days. I’d like to move to another QNAP with 64-bit support.

My only tech prerequisites are that memory is DDR4 (as DDR3 is getting harder to find), that the CPU is x64 capable (no ARM), and there are 6 to 8 drive slots for 3.5″ drives.

I’d like to have enough CPU grunt to run up a couple of VMs for lab work, plus being able to run Plex/Sonarr/Radarr without issue.

There are few 6 bay options available with DDR4 and 64bit CPU for Plex streaming. The TS-673, TVS-673e and TS-653B (with DDR3 but 64bit). You can find the comparison here (link). My personal choice would be TS-653B even though the RAM is DDR3. It is very expandable and upgradable choice. It comes with transcoding engine for remote Plex streaming where other options will also do remote streaming but with software conversion which might consume more CPU resources. The TS-673 is a great choice if you want to install a dedicated graphics card for improved Plex transcoding or even virtualization. If you want the best NAS in the range then TVS-673e is an option with embedded Radeon™ R7 graphics processor which helps a lot too.
