I’m a music composer and I use a lot of virtual instruments (and a lot of RAM…).
Since I am upgrading my studio I was wondering if NAS could be used instead of SSDs.Here’s the case:
I will have two PCs, one with the DAW (I use Cubase) and the other one with the sound library (around 1 TB in few different SSD disks). So, usually, people connect PC 1 to PC 2 using Ethernet 10Gb cable to transfer the sound files from PC 2 to PC 1.
What if I connect both PCs (or just PC 2) with a NAS? Using USB-C or Ethernet 10Gb?
Or better if I use the NAS for RAID only?
In other words, which solution is faster for transferring files?
1) From PC 2 with SSD to PC 1 via Ethernet.
2) From PC 2 with NAS to PC 1 via Ethernet (or via USB C…cause I want both PCs with that port).
You should get TS-453B or TS-453Be with a 10GbE card built in and move all SSD drives into a NAS. That all you need is PC1 for editing and a NAS with all your library. Or get even 6 bay – TS653B then you can have spare two bays for additional storage. Each drive inside can have its own drive letter. And you can even have a combination of things. Few separate disks and few RAIDs.
Then this 10GbE NAS can be connected to the 10GbE switch and later on to another 10GbE PCs. The RAID with 2-3 drives will be equally fast as SSD. More drives will mean greater speed with a maximum around 1200MB/s (10Gbe bandwidth). USB-C solution would be slower.
