NAS/Router. Hi, Im a happy user of an Synology DS216 Play NAS since a couple of years. Im looking to buy a Synology RT2600 or MR2200. Will any of these units replace my NAS or is there any advantage to continue using the Synology NAS going forward? I see in the spec of at least the RT2600 you can add USB disks as on the current NAS but I would expect Synology to have open up for old NAS customer to take some extra advantage of their Synology NAS? Wrong?
Would it be the same answer for both units?
It might be very tempting to get a Synology router and use it as a NAS. It will let you install the cloud station and synchronize your data between computers and router. You will also be able to stream your media on DLNA enabled devices. You may do that if you have no important files on the attached drive. Because this way you will lose your data, the only question is- when? You need to figure out how are you gonna back up your drive.
Proper NAS will give you some sort of protection. If it is one bay NAS, the attached external drive will do regular backups of your files. If you have 2 or more bay NAS, you are protected with one or more drive failure (with RAID1/ RAID5/ RAID6 etc.).
Once your data is safe, this is a very cheap option to sort out your internet traffic, multimedia center and network file sharing – all in one place.
