NAS as Data storage for my Virtual machines – over ISCSI

I currently have a trusty old QNAP TS-410, which I’ve had since 2009. It’s run like a trooper for almost 10 years, but I think most will agree it’s now in desperate need of an upgrade, as I struggle to do what I want to do with it nowadays.

My main use of my existing NAS is a Data store and an ISCSI environment for my Virtual machines etc. I’d like any new NAS to be able to carry on with those elements, but also be able to offer strong Plex support on the device. (currently, my Plex environment runs on a VM)

So, there are a couple of NAS’s which have caught my attention and I was just looking for your opinion as to what you feel would work well for my requirements.

There are a couple of the X models which have caught my eye – QNAP TVS-951X, and 932x.
And there is also this one seems to fill most of my needs, but doesn’t seem to come with an SSD option – TS-653A

Max – 2k. (this price includes storage as well as enclosure

My choice within this budget would be TVS951X which still features decent processor and tired storage functionality. This NAS will serve as good ISCSI storage for virtual machines. There will be also a Plex app available which you can install on the NAS – no need for a virtual machine.

The 932x will not be a very future-proof solution, it is made for backup tasks only. And 53A series are now end of life and not supported anymore.
