Storage solution for 15 to 20 video editors

We’re a small TV production company using a Proliant MicroServer Gen 8 (21TB) and needing to upgrade. We’ll possibly need 15 to 20 editors and story and AE’s attached to it working on different shows. We’re using AVID. I’ve been told about the AVID Nexis Pro. Also, you should know that we don’t have a cold room the AVID Pro would need. We’d also like something that could possibly be accessed remotely (we have an editor that may work from Italy) if possible. Also looking for a low maintenance option.

For around 10 editors Qnap TVS-1582TU would be a great solution with dual media options like HDD and SSD.

But once you need more people to work of this storage device more bandwidth it need to deliver. You can either go flash or bulk HDD way. For 90TB storage you will need to look at something with at least 12 bays or more. The maximum size drive tend to cost more per terabyte.

There are two options out there, either Ryzen or Intel based rack mounted NAS.

Intel based models:

  • tvs-1272xu-rp
  • tvs-1672xu-rp
  • tvs-2472xu-rp

Ryzen based models:

  • ts-1677xu-rp
  • ts-2477xu-rp

Also dual power supply will be very useful feature to have which will ensure uninterrupted service even if one fails.

The x4 and x8 PCIe slots will also allow you to install NVMe cards for M.2 sticks where each stick can reach around 3000MB/s data transfer speeds. You can then create separate editing volume and use hard drive RAID for raw footage storage as well as for finished project distribution.

You can easily stack these servers up on top of each other in order to add more capacity later.

With powerful Intel based CPU you can also create a virtual machine for remote editors. They can connect even from Italy and work from inside the NAS.

The Ultimate choice would be TDS-16489U-SE1-R2 with 4 10GbE port built in already which will allow 8 editors to edit 4K videos simultaneously. Add another two dual port 10GbE cards and you can have already 16 editors. The maximum 10GbE ports you can add is 10 which makes it altogether 14 ports for more then 20 video editors to access and work on.

Or you can also install 40GbE/25GbE NICs similarly like Avid Nexis Pro and bring this to entirely new level like 8K video editing.

You can use this to edit for all popular editing software:

Third-party Editing  Adobe Premiere Pro CC
 Apple Final Cut Pro X
 Grass Valley EDIUS Pro
 Black Magic DaVinci Resolve
