How to reduce noise on Synology NAS?

Quick update:

Amazon delivered the Noctua fans very quickly, and I already installed them!

WOW. Just WOW.

Using my phone noise level app, noise level went from 37dB (in idle) to 28dB, where the noise level with the NAS off in the room was at 25-26dB.

Subjectively, the NAS is almost silent!!!

Now, I feel a significantly lower air flow (placing my hand 2-3cm from the exhaust fans), so I was worried about thermals… After several hours of copying data from my old NAS to the new RS1221+, the readings seem pretty stable at CPU temp of 49C and the HDDs at 30C.

5 minutes after copy finished – CPU dropped to 44C and HDDs to 28C.

Bottom line:

I am VERY happy now! Honestly, I think the RS1221+ is not louder than my DS418play… amazing!

Synology 720+ replaced fan with Noctua NF-A9 FLX. Worked for a short time, now has since completely stopped, NAS (DSM 6) reports fan has stopped working. No longer spinning. Tried changing settings to Cool and Full to no effect.

I had a 10×12 by 1 inch high “under laptop” cooling fan. I was working on airplanes and on bed sheets and want just circulation. The fans (2) are whisper quiet. I have my PLEX server updated at 3 AM and it makes my DEL computer fan scream! My question is, I have 4 of the 80mm small variable speed fans. I could build them into a platform up which to set the nas. There doesn’t seem to be venting on the bottom of my DS1522+ synology 5 bay. Thoughts? I’d have to power them down to just below half speed or the noise would be overwhelming. I have a means to measure the temp of the NAS and might look for a variable speed switch triggered by the temp, but I want to ask you folks if it’s not worth it.
