How long can an Ethernet cable be without losing speed?

Can I run a 120ft ethernet to a NAS upstairs in my home without a performance hit?  Or do I really need to have the NAS next to my router?
I am concerned about noise since my router is by my TV.  If I hook it up there then I may hear it over my TV plus a box my wife may hate seeing on the shelf.

It depends on the cable you use. The oldest CAT5 standard that every office used to have is going to work up to 100 metres (328 feet). In order to cover a greater distance, you need to add a small switch every 100 metres. This way you can achieve longer distances with existing cables.
